Kate said slowly, “I don’t think she truly loves you. She’s only feeding her vanity. Otherwise, why would she have hidden her background from you from the start? She probably just wanted to see your regret upon learning she’s the Ravelle family heiress, to satisfy herself.”
Carter clenched his fists, his eyes darkening with red veins. After a moment, he shouted hoarsely, “No way! Rhea isn’t that kind of person!”
His reaction stunned Kate. She asked, “You think she isn’t?”
Carter took a deep breath. “I used to think that she did it on purpose, too. But after living with her for six years, I know exactly what kind of person she is. You don’t need to slander her just to ease your own bitterness over unrequited love.”
Kate hadn’t expected Carter to defend Rhea. She frowned. “Do you still love Rhea?”
“She’s the only person in this world who has ever truly cared for me. How could I not love her? I’ve never stopped loving her. I was only deceived by that bitch Lauren, which caused me to misunderstand Rhea and hurt her.”
Now, mentioning all this, Carter almost wished he could kill his former self.
Kate felt as if an invisible hand was tearing at her throat and chest as she listened to him.
She couldn’t understand why Rhea had so many people protecting and loving her. Even someone like Carter, fallen and broken as he was now, still didn’t hate her.
“Are you out of your mind, Carter?”
Kate was being a little extreme. “She never considered you at all when she was off being affectionate with other men. After the divorce, she ignored your kids entirely. And you still think she’s a good person?”
Carter smiled wryly. “We’re divorced. Why should she care for my kids? She has no obligation to do so. I was too selfish back then, thinking that she had a responsibility to help me take care of the kids. But they aren’t hers, and I’m their legal guardian. No one has the right to judge her for this. She was their stepmother for six years, giving everything she could. I should be grateful.”
But understanding it now was meaningless.
Kate clenched her teeth so hard that her jaw ached.
“She’s their stepmother. Once a stepmother, always a stepmother. She is responsible for the kids!” Her tone turned cold.
Frowning, Carter looked at her strangely.
