I Quit Being a Stepmother (Cypress Gem) novel Chapter 386

Chapter 386

Kate’s words left Evie’s heart aching. Tears slipped down her cheeks as she reached out and touched Kate’s face.

Evie then said, When I’m gone, you’ll have to learn how to protect yourself. Your dad cares too much about appearances. He’ll never bend when he should. As for you and RheaKate, let it go. Live your life well. Only then will I be able to rest in peace.

These days, Evie was caught between trying to accept the fact that her days were numbered and worrying about her only daughter.

The Snider and Ravelle families were so powerful. How could Kate ever stand against them alone?

It’s too hard being their enemy. If you can, be their friend. That’s the only way you’ll be safe.

Kate fought back her tears. Her eyes burned red from the strain. I don’t want them to protect me. I want you. So please, Mom, listen to me. Cooperate with the treatment, okay? Stay with me a little longer. You still need to see me walk down the aisle.

Evie smiled faintly and pulled Kate into an embrace. Their tears fell silently together.

That afternoon, Kate met with lung cancer specialists to discuss treatment options.

However, every single one gave her the same answer. There was little hope. More treatment only meant more suffering for Evie.

But Kate couldn’t just stand by and watch Evie die. She insisted, Just continue trying.

The specialists nodded helplessly. We’ll do everything we can.

Evie’s attending physician agreed. The hospital will fully cooperate.

Not long after they left, a maid entered. Ms. Pearson, a Mr. Burton has come to visit Mrs. Pearson.

Mr. Burton? They didn’t know anyone by that surname.

Kate walked back to the ward and pushed open the door. The first thing she saw was a tall, broadshouldered figure.

He stood about sixfootone, dressed in a black suit. Two secretarylike people were waiting by the door of the ward.

His voice was low and steady as he said, Mrs. Pearson, you mustn’t lose hope.

Kate, come here.Connor beckoned her closer.

Let me introduce you. This is my daughter, Kate. Kate, this is Sawyer Burton, one of my students.

The man turned around, his eyes meeting Kate’s. He gave a slight nod. Nice to meet you. I’m Sawyer Burton.

Kate returned a gentle smile. Nice to meet you, too. I’m Kate Pearson.

Sawyer is now CEO of a pharmaceutical company. He’s done very well for himself,Connor said proudly.

Sawyer had heard of Evie’s condition and had come personally with his medical team. He had even brought a targeted drug.

A complete cure was unlikely, but at least it could keep the illness from spreading further and spare her some suffering.

Thank you so much, Sawyer,Connor said earnestly.

Sawyer shook his head lightly. It’s the least I can do.

Are you still based overseas?Connor asked.

That’s good,Evie said softly. It’s closer to home. Kate, why don’t you take Sawyer out for a meal?

Kate didn’t refuse. Mr. Burton, I know a nice restaurant nearby.
