George already knew. Philip had called him, and he immediately cleared his entire day’s schedule to rush over to the hospital. He glanced at Carter and asked, “Mr. Jamison, is it appropriate to be pestering my girlfriend like this?”

Carter didn’t want to look weak in front of him. He frowned. “The kids were poisoned, and it happened at the Ravelle residence. Isn’t it reasonable for me to ask a few questions?”

“Oh, Mr. Jamison, have you been studying criminal investigation in your spare time now?” George shot back.

“You…”

George draped an arm around Rhea’s shoulders and soothed her in a gentle voice. “Sit down and rest. I’ve already called in a specialist.”

Rhea looked at him with nothing but tenderness and trust. She nodded. “Okay.”

Their hands were clasped affectionately. They sat, speaking to each other in hushed tones as if no one else were around. Carter sat by the bedside, his peripheral vision filled with the two of them. He noticed the way Rhea leaned on George, and a sharp ache twisted in his chest.

Back then, Rhea used to speak to him with that soft, gentle tone. But now, there was no trace of him in her eyes.

Carter felt a dull, jealous pain in his chest. He wanted to rush over and pull them apart.

He couldn’t help himself as he remarked, “The kids are still unconscious, and you’re sitting there flirting?”

George didn’t even look in his direction. He asked Rhea instead, “Are you hungry? I’ll have the restaurant send something over.”

Rhea ignored Carter as well. “I’m not hungry. You’re busy with work, so you don’t have to stay here with me. The specialist will be here soon, right?”

“How could I leave you alone here?”

Let alone with Carter right there.

Carter’s expression grew even darker at those words.

Alone? Wasn’t he a human in George’s eyes?

Carter looked over and raised his voice. “The kids come first right now. Can’t you take your lovey–dovey stuff outside?”

He couldn’t stand another second of it.

Rhea finally looked up. “I think you should be quiet. That would be better than anything else.”

Carter flinched at the barb. His expression went from bad to worse.

At the oncology hospital across the way, Kate received the news about the two children being admitted. A faint smile tugged at her lips.

“Ms. Pearson, Mrs. Pearson wants to see you,” the maid called.

Kate went to the ward. “Mom, you wanted to see me?”

Evie had wasted away. Like many cancer patients, she looked gaunt and weak. Her voice was barely a whisper as she said, “Kate, let’s go home.”
