Carter’s expression darkened because Elena had dragged him into her tirade.

Elena sat upright, as if she were judging a criminal. “They cared for the kids out of goodwill. Instead of showing any gratitude, your nerve is as thick as ever. If you’re so capable, take them and get them treated yourself. What are you still doing here?”

Kate spoke up then. “Ms. Austin, this is their family matter. We shouldn’t interfere. There’s a cafe downstairs. Would you like to join me for some coffee?”

Elena threw her a quick glance. “I’m petty. Honestly, I don’t have the mood for coffee. But Ms. Pearson, your mother’s sick, and yet you’re still smiling. Does watching the chaos give you pleasure?”

She spared no one. Her words came fast, yet her tone was calm, leaving no room for argument.

Kate almost lost her composure. “I’m just worried that you might be upset.”

Elena flat–out refused. “No need. Worry about your own family first.”

Noticing Kate back down, Lauren finally spoke up. “Elena, we’re acquainted. There’s no need to single me out like this. Yes, I’ve been a negligent mother, but I am also their birth mother. Of course I’ll be worried. It’s part of my responsibility.”

“Don’t just talk about responsibility,” Elena shot back, leaning against the couch. “Show some action. A VIP room costs a fortune per day, not to mention the IVs and treatment fees. Pay for all that first, and then you can point fingers at others.”

Lauren didn’t have that much money. She had squandered everything the old man from overseas had given her.

“You can afford hundreds of thousands of dollars for your bag, but can’t cover the kids‘ medical bills?” Elena tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear before she continued, “Then go ask your old lover for it. I heard that Mr. Kinney is staying at the

hotel next door.”

At the mention, Carter instantly recalled what he had seen on the street back then.

Lauren disgusted him to the core. He couldn’t believe that she could actually cozy up to an old man just for money.

The thought alone made him queasy. Without saying another word, he grabbed her sleeve and yanked her back. “Stay away from my kids.”

Lauren’s face flushed with a mix of shame and anger. “You-”

Rhea, already irritated, pointed coldly at the door. “Argue outside.”

Her anger was palpable.

George frowned.

Rocco, who had been keeping watch from outside the ward, stepped in with two guards. Without hesitation, he escorted both

Carter and Lauren out.

Seeing that, Elena smirked. “Nathan, my dad’s private doctor has studied this kind of toxin. I’ve already called him over.”

Nathan was surprised. “Thank you.”

Elena chuckled lightly. “It’s the least I could do.”

Watching this, Kate couldn’t help but realize something obvious–Elena had feelings for Nathan.

She then got to her feet and said, “I won’t disturb you any longer. I’ll get back to my mom.”
