Rhea nodded. “I’ve never blamed anyone. I admit that I was foolish before, but that doesn’t justify everything you’ve done. You brought the consequences on yourself. Now that it’s come to this, let’s stop pretending. If you won’t take responsibility for what you’ve done, then I’ll help you.”
Kate ground her teeth. “What are you trying to do?”
Rhea gave her a curious look. “That should be my question. What are you trying to do, Kate?”
“I…”
Suddenly, pain shot through Kate’s arm.
The door swung open, and Rocco grabbed her slender arm, yanking her straight out of the ward.
“Leave immediately. We don’t want anyone with ill intentions to disturb the kids.” Rocco looked at her as if she were utterly irredeemable.
Kate felt utterly humiliated.
She held back her tears. Her voice came out hoarse, choked with defiance. “We really don’t have to be friends anymore.”
“One less of you won’t make a difference.”
George strode past Kate and turned to Rhea. “Liora and the others are waiting at the restaurant next to the hospital. I’ll stay here with the kids. Have the bodyguards escort you there.”
Rhea stood up. “No need. The bodyguards and maids can stay here. The doctor said that the kids are fine for now. You should
come with me.”
George held her hand. “Okay. I’ll go with you.”
They then walked past Kate as if she were invisible.
Ten minutes later, Kate left the hospital, heading toward her car.
She glanced up and saw Liora, Valerie, and the others getting out of a car across the street. Rhea was surrounded by them, and they were chatting happily.
Then, they entered a restaurant together.
George stayed by Rhea’s side like a guardian angel.
Kate was no longer part of the lively, harmonious scene.
“Ms. Pearson, shall we head home?” her driver, Alfonso Daniels, asked.
Kate stood frozen, whispering to herself, “Why do I get nothing?”
Alfonso felt for her. “Ms. Pearson, everyone hits rough patches. We just have to get through them.”
She wanted a lover, a happy and harmonious family, and healthy parents. That was all.
Little did she know that such simple wishes were things most people didn’t have.
Kate remembered how her family and the Sniders had held two engagement discussions before. She had been so excited that she couldn’t sleep.
