“Kate, Aunt Evie left this for you,” Marcus said.

It was a suicide note.

Kate’s eyelashes were damp, and her face was streaked with tears. She took the letter with shaking

hands.

Evie’s handwriting was beautiful. She wrote, “Kate, my darling daughter, I’ve been happy being your mother for nearly 30 years. You fulfilled every dream I had of motherhood and made me the envy of all women. They all admired me for having a beautiful, intelligent, polite, kind, and considerate daughter. I was incredibly proud and honored.

“But when did all of this change? Lately, I’ve been lying awake, unable to sleep, while thinking about it. It’s my fault, and your father’s. Our failure in raising you led to the criticism and scorn you face now. That’s why I don’t deserve to be a mother. I don’t deserve to be called your mother.

“Don’t blame yourself. I’m gravely ill, and watching myself waste away, becoming neither human nor ghost… I can’t bear it. I want to remain beautiful in your eyes forever.

“Kate, be someone who contributes to society, not someone caught up in schemes and struggles. You can’t hold onto what isn’t yours. If there is a next life, I’ll make it up to you and raise you to be the best version of yourself.

“Goodbye, my daughter. These are my last words as Evie Palmer.”

Tears fell onto the paper, spreading in wet circles. Kate suddenly let out a sob as regret and hatred surged in her heart.

What she hated the most was the thought that perhaps Evie wouldn’t have been driven to jump if she had eliminated those two people earlier.

She gripped the bedsheet tightly, her bloodshot eyes so intense they could make anyone shudder.

She looked up and said, “Get the best mortician for my mother.”

Evie’s body was shattered beyond recognition and needed restoration.

The hospital room was crowded with Connor’s and Evie’s students who had come to pay their respects. Kate insisted on getting out of bed.

“Ms. Pearson, the doctor said that you need to rest.”

Kate clung to the bed’s railing, her face as pale as a sheet. “How can I? My mother has just passed. I need to take charge and manage the guests coming to mourn.”

Kate stood there, dressed in black, greeting mourners and accepting their condolences. She managed a faint smile as she faced them.
