Connor seemed to see through Kate’s thoughts and immediately snapped, “You lost because you lack character and because you turn on people without a second thought! You lost because you lack the most precious qualities! George would have to be blind to want someone like you, who’s unrepentant and full of false righteousness!”

Kate was stunned by his words. Then, she laughed. “False righteousness? I must’ve inherited that from you.”

Connor’s eyes widened. “What did you say?”

“Have you forgotten what you’ve done?” Kate narrowed her eyes. “You’re supposed to be a respected teacher, yet you did something as despicable as preying on a defenseless college student. You didn’t set an example, so what right do you have to judge me?”

Connor’s eyes bulged, and he lunged forward, roaring, “Who told you that? Who?”

“Who do you think?” Kate sneered. “George threatened me with it long ago. If it weren’t for me, you would already have been ruined. So, I must have inherited this habit of blaming others from you.”

Connor clutched his chest, nearly coughing up blood from rage. He collapsed onto the couch in great unease, his eyelashes trembling and his lips paling.

Could George really dig up something from so long ago? How could he… If he knew, would he use it to threaten their family again?

“He’s slandering me! How can you believe him, you fool?” Connor tried to defend himself as his gaze grew colder.

Kate looked up, her mocking eyes landing on his guilty face. She didn’t bother saying more and stood, heading to the liquor cabinet.

“Mr. Pearson, Mr. Burton is here to see you,” a maid announced.

Mr. Burton? Sawyer Burton?

Kate didn’t pause. She had a maid fetch a glass, then sat on a high stool, sipping her drink while watching Sawyer enter.

From a distance, he glanced at her, offering only a nod as a greeting. She returned a faint smile.

“My wayward daughter’s in a bad mood. Don’t mind her. Have some tea,” Connor said. He was genuinely touched that Sawyer would visit at a time when the Pearson family’s reputation was in

tatters.

“Mr. Pearson, the departed are gone. You must take care of yourself. At least you still have your

Connor lowered his eyes. “After all this, how can Kate marry anyone in Draventh?” He suddenly glanced at Sawyer. “You’re not seeing anyone yet?”

“Work keeps me busy,” Sawyer answered evenly.

Some time later, Sawyer left.

Connor strode over to Kate. “Try spending some time with Sawyer. If things work out, you two can get married.”

Kate looked

“What?”

She was already tipsy, her mind consumed by Evie’s suicide note. The words tore at her heart.

“Sawyer is capable. He might help our family recover from this. If I just leave like this, our family’s name will be forever tarnished in Draventh’s history.”
