For a fleeting moment, George’s face flashed in Kate’s mind. She had loved him so deeply for so long. She couldn’t just let him go and cut him out of her life so abruptly.
People clung to what they couldn’t have, sometimes turning love into hate. Yet, she still cherished those old dreams and fantasies.
Kate longed for the days when the Pearson and Snider families discussed her marriage to George. Those were the happiest days of her 20–plus years. Every night before she fell asleep, her heart and eyes were filled with warmth, joy, and anticipation.
Only a few months had passed since then, yet it felt like a lifetime ago.
She kept pouring herself wine, trying to numb her grief with alcohol. Evie’s death, letting go of her love, and the looming troubles ahead… Each matter weighed on her, making bitterness spread through her. Her tears fell uncontrollably.
“Don’t drink so much. I’m inviting Mr. Zaire Gallagher over tomorrow to perform a ritual for your mother,” Connor said.
With Evie’s recent passing, he was heartbroken. Naturally, he couldn’t sleep.
However, Kate didn’t respond. She just kept drinking quietly, as if alcohol were her only companion
now.
Sawyer…
Connor was right. Marrying someone powerful was the only way to revive the Pearson family. However, she felt nothing for Sawyer.
She stubbornly replayed every detail of George–how every move he made captivated her, even
bewitched her.
Suddenly, she asked, “Do you know about Sawyer’s family?”
“He has no parents and no ties,” Connor said hoarsely.
The next day, the atmosphere on the top floor of Snider Group was heavy with tension.
The mood in the reception room had plummeted to freezing, sparked by a single sentence from
Connor.
Early that morning, Connor, with bloodshot eyes, had come to confront George. He wanted to probe George and find out whether the latter had solid evidence about his past with that college student.

Unfortunately for him, George was a master at deflection. He didn’t give Connor a straight answer.
Frustrated, Connor had blurted, “Do you think you’d have the right to sit here and talk to me if your brother hadn’t died, George Snider? Some even suspect that you caused his death! Your mother probably doesn’t know the truth, does she? It was you who told your brother to go to his girlfriend back then!
“If you hadn’t sent him, he wouldn’t have died! You’re a curse! And now, you’ve ruined my family. What more do you want?”
Those words crossed George’s line, but his expression remained calm as he held out a hand toward a bodyguard. “Get me a knife.”
The bodyguard handed him a fruit knife.
A second later, Connor was pinned face–down on the coffee table, his cheek pressed against the surface. In his line of sight was a fruit platter and… George’s grim face.
