Chapter 411
When Carter regained consciousness, he saw Lauren and Mia on the couch, chatting. Their voices were the only sounds in the hospital room.
He didn’t know what exactly they were talking about, but he picked up on a few cosmetics–related terms. They also giggled now and then, seemingly in good moods.
His gaze moved to his hand, where the IV needle had been inserted. It looked exceptionally pale.
The liquid in the IV drip fell, drop by drop.
Carter suddenly remembered the past. Whenever he was unwell, he would see Rhea by his side when he opened his eyes, no matter the time. She would either be seated by his bedside or resting her head on the edge, sleeping while keeping an eye on him.
She would immediately notice when he was awake and anxiously ask him how he was doing. She would fuss over him, wanting to know whether he was hungry or if he felt any discomfort.
Every time, he was pampered. She would do everything for him, and he wouldn’t need to lift a finger or worry about anything.
She had taken excellent care of him. All he would need to do was focus on his career because she
would handle everything else behind the scenes.
But back then, instead of feeling comforted or reassured, he found Rhea’s attentiveness excessive
and bothersome.
Carter remembered that he had once said to her icily, “It’s just a minor illness. Do you need to be so cautious? I need to work, so stop asking me if I need to eat. Now, get out.”
He racked his brains, trying to recall how Rhea had looked then. The smile on her beautiful face had faded, and she had quietly left while holding his soup.
It had never mattered to him in the past. But now, looking back, he wanted to slap himself hard.
So he did.
When the slaps rang out, Lauren and Mia, who were engrossed in their conversation, finally realized that he was awake. They were startled by the noise.
“Carter, what are you doing?” Mia hurried over and grabbed Carter’s hand, stopping him.
He had only slapped himself a few times, but his right cheek already had a clear handprint on it. He looked up at Lauren and asked, “Why are you here?”
She pursed her lips. “You’re the father of my children. How could I not come to see you when you

collapsed from exhaustion?”
Even now, Lauren was acting like a helpless victim, as if everything had happened due to cruel twists. of fate. She made it seem like she was weak and always forced into things against her will!
Carter had had enough. He closed his eyes and sucked in a breath. “You’re not needed here. Please
leave.”
Lauren lowered her head. “I…”
“Carter, Lauren was kind enough to visit you. No matter how upset you are, you can’t just chase her off like this. Rhea dropped by earlier–why didn’t you snap at her? She raised the children, so she has to be responsible for them! Honestly, people from small towns just don’t have any class!” Mia
scoffed.
Lauren’s lashes fluttered. Carter had been unconscious for over two hours, and she had been there for an hour and a half. Despite hearing Mia insult Rhea all that time, Lauren never explained anything about Rhea’s true identity.
Carter glanced at her before asking Mia, “A small town? Do you think that’s what Draventh is? You sure know your stuff.”
