Cynthia’s head buzzed, as if thunder were exploding in her ears. Over the years, whenever she thought about Gerard’s death, she would go nights without sleep.
She hated rainy days and people who weren’t level–headed. She believed that the storm and that temperamental woman had killed Gerard. However, she had never held the car that hit him accountable.
Cynthia’s rationality was on the verge of shattering.
Kate quietly waited. She didn’t say anything else as she casually poured Cynthia a glass of water. She was there to pretend it was a chance encounter.
Cynthia had gone abroad on vacation with her friends after the holidays; Steven and George weren’t
with her.
“Have some water, Mrs. Snider.”
The sea breeze came in through the window, blowing away the anger ravaging Cynthia’s heart and mind. She looked at Kate, seemingly concerned. “Why are you here?”
She hadn’t forgotten what had happened, and her guard was still up.
Kate said, “I came to take a breather and clear my mind. My mother wanted to come here when she was alive but never made it, so I’m here to take in the sights on her behalf. I happened to see your details when checking in at this hotel and thought it was a small world. With you here, I feel like
Mom’s still with me.”
Cynthia, who had suppressed her emotions just before, couldn’t help but shed tears. She hugged Kate and said, “Oh, you’re a dear.”
A child without a mother was truly pitiful–just like her Gerard, who had died so young. If Hell really existed, what would he do down there, all alone with no one to lean on?
Over the years, whenever Cynthia thought about these things, her imagination would run wild, leaving her heart in such pain that she would need medication to quell the agony.
She clutched her chest as her face twisted in pain.
“Mrs. Snider, what’s wrong?” Kate looked worried.
“My medicine…” Cynthia pointed toward the door. “It’s in my bag…”
Kate immediately went to look for it. “Give me a minute!”
She stood in the foyer while rummaging through Cynthia’s bag for the medicine. Cynthia crumpled

onto the bed in agony, growing quieter by the second.
Kate stopped rummaging and turned to look in the direction of the bedroom. She knew that Cynthia had a chronic heart problem. It wouldn’t kill her, though.
When Cynthia woke up in the hospital, she saw Kate conversing with the doctor in Albish, asking
about her condition.
She felt comforted. She was alone in a foreign country, and being sick made her feel vulnerable. However, she didn’t want to alert Steven or George to this yet. She needed time to investigate and think about certain things.
The doctor left.
“Mrs. Snider, you’re awake.” Kate noticed that Cynthia had regained consciousness. “You scared me so badly.”
