Chapter 415
Not wanting to alert Seamus, who was in the room opposite hers, Kate waited until 1:30 am to leave the room with her luggage. She didn’t ask her bodyguards to come up to help her. Having fewer people around would mean less noise.
She quietly opened the door.
“Hi. It’s lovely to see you in the middle of the night, Ms. Pearson.”
Seamus‘ face appeared before Kate’s eyes.
His room door was wide open as he sat in an executive chair that he’d gotten from somewhere. He looked like he was right at home. He even had a small, round table beside him with a cup of coffee and a small fruit platter on it.
It seemed he had been waiting there for a while.
Kate suppressed her anger and calmly shut her door before heading to the right. Seamus watched her, smiling. He didn’t say anything else or follow her.
It was 5:00 am. Kate had spent the night in her car. Not many people were active at this hour, so she took the opportunity to slip Cynthia out of the hotel.
“I booked us a nice place to look at flowers. You love flower fields, right? Switching to a hotel nearby will ensure that you get more rest, too,” Kate said.
Cynthia had tossed and turned all night. As soon as she shut her eyes, she remembered what Kate
had told her.
Kate started the car. She even glanced behind to make sure that no cars were following them.
“Kate,” Cynthia said.
Kate turned to her. “Yes, Mrs. Snider?”
“Your father… How did he hear about that matter?”
Kate lowered her gaze. “Gerard’s accident was right outside the college where my father was teaching. It was pouring when it happened, and Dad wanted to help. He later heard about what had happened from Gerard’s bodyguards, who arrived after him.
“One of the bodyguards said that perhaps nothing would have happened to Gerard if George hadn’t supported him in searching for his girlfriend and then left to pick Rhea up instead of staying with him.

“Dad was worried that he would disrupt the peace in your home, so he hid the truth for years. I only heard him blurt it out after he got drunk because he missed Mom too much.”
Kate looked downcast. “Gerard was so young, and he had such a bright future ahead of him. He could’ve had a wonderful life.”
“That’s enough!” Cynthia couldn’t breathe.
She had come out with Kate because she couldn’t face George right now–not with how she was feeling. What if she confronted him and he confirmed it? Should she blame him? Hate him? She didn’t want to face it, nor did she have the courage to do so.
Kate sensed Cynthia’s avoidance and gently said, “Mrs. Snider, we have to move on from what’s happened. You can’t keep bottling this up. Otherwise, it’ll eat away at you from the inside. You and George are mother and son. All you need to do is talk to him. I’ve told my father to take this to the grave, so don’t worry about him. He won’t tell anyone about this.”
Cynthia couldn’t care less whether anyone else found out about this. Her mind was filled with the memory of how horrific Gerard had looked in death.
She wondered if George would have really told Gerard to go after his girlfriend alone in a storm. Didn’t he realize how dangerous it would be for Gerard to drive alone under the circumstances? Yet all he had cared about was picking Rhea up at the airport.
Cynthia’s blood boiled at the possibility, but she also didn’t want to think so badly of her own son.
“I know.” She wiped her tears. “I’ve been feeling down lately, and I don’t want to go back yet. You can leave if you have other things to do. You don’t need to stay with me.”
Kate smiled. “It’s such a coincidence to have run into you here, though. I would be delighted if I could stay by your side. You’re like my second mother, after all.”
She was so attentive and considerate that Cynthia naturally liked having her around. However, unlike in the past, she no longer thought that Kate was naive.
Upon arriving at the new hotel, Kate scanned her surroundings. She only led Cynthia inside the hotel to check in once she was sure that Seamus was nowhere in sight.
In the room,
Kate helped Cynthia unpack her luggage before ordering room service.
“Thank you so much, Kate,” Cynthia said sincerely.
“It’s no problem.”
