But then one of the women in the pantry spoke up. “That meeting was for the project team. We’re in the translation team. We have different responsibilities. You wouldn’t have had a reason to be there

anyway.”

Kate froze for a couple of seconds, then suddenly smiled. “Ah, that makes sense. I knew it. Ms. Ravelle and I grew up together. She would never try to isolate me like that.”

The women exchanged glances, then rose from their seats and headed for the door.

“Wait, sorry. Can I ask something?” Kate called after them.

They paused, turning back.

“Do we have a director for the translation team, too?”

The women instantly grew wary, wondering what she meant by that. Was she eyeing that spot?

One of them replied, “There’s only a team leader. No director.”

The translation team was small, with barely nine people, and they rarely even saw each other. So,

there was no need for a director.

“I see.” Kate put on what she thought was a kind and friendly smile and said, “Thank you.”

Back at her desk, she glanced around. Most of the translators were women. They were quiet and detached, hardly talking to one another.

She stood and took out the gifts she had prepared. “Hi, everyone. I’m new here, so I hope you’ll guide me along. Here’s a little token. I hope you’ll like it.”

She placed a small, elegant bag on each desk. Inside were chocolates and a custom lipstick in a universally flattering shade.

Once they accepted a gift, it was challenging to maintain a cold demeanor.

One woman said, “You really didn’t have to. We’ll be colleagues and friends now.”

Kate returned to her seat, smiling. “I’m so happy to hear that. I don’t have many friends. Ms. Ravelle is one of them. Now I get to know all of you, too.”

That was when someone curiously asked, “Does Ms. Ravelle have a particularly impressive résumé? Where did she work before this?”

Kate tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear, pretending to hesitate. “Well… I actually haven’t

The women immediately pulled out their phones to search for the name.

Kate noticed their reactions and said lightly, “But there’s no need to be nervous. I’ve known Rhea for many years. She can be a bit childish at times, but she’s meticulous when it comes to work. I have full confidence in her abilities.”
