Paula scoffed. “Natural? She bullied her friends and stole her friend’s fiance all because of her family name. This is unbelievable. How can someone like that even deserve love?”

“She’ll just get divorced again. After all, she couldn’t even stay in her last marriage,” another

woman said.

Someone asked, “By the way, Kate, why did Ms. Ravelle get divorced before?”

Everyone was curious about their new boss, and women loved gossip.

Kate looked torn. “It’s because she kept her family background a secret. Her ex–husband didn’t know. When he was struggling with work and lacked money and connections, she didn’t interfere. Later, when he found out, I guess some distance formed between them. There’s a lot to it, and I don’t really know the details.”

She had deliberately left the ending vague. If anyone later found out the truth, she could say that she didn’t know the details and had only heard bits and pieces.

Suddenly, Annie choked on her drink and coughed violently. Her face flushed red.

Paula quickly patted her back. “Ms. Levy, are you okay?”

Annie waved her off. “I’m… fine. Just startled.”

Startled? Nothing had happened. Only Kate was talking. What could have startled her?

Annie had been shocked by the brazenness of Kate’s lies. She hadn’t imagined someone could twist facts so shamelessly and say it with a straight face.

“Ms. Levy, I’m sorry if talking about these unpleasant things made you uncomfortable,” Kate said, standing to hand her some napkins. “Let’s stop and just enjoy the meal.”

Annie felt so speechless that she had lost all her appetite.

She didn’t forget what Rhea had told her earlier. Clearly, Rhea had already known Kate would gossip behind her back.

Since she had accepted Rhea’s project proposal, Annie couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
