Chapter 498
The people around didn’t know what exactly had happened. The other staff from Solaris Ventures only saw Lauren smile and say something to Kate before Kate snapped at her.
Up until then, everyone thought that Kate was a soft–spoken peacemaker who was kind and lovely. But after the incident the other day, part of the translation team got the vague feeling that she was probably a two–faced hypocrite whose gentle demeanor was just an act.
With those suspicions floating around, some of the staff, despite not liking Heidi as their new team leader, had chosen to leave Gisselle’s team.
The project team, however, didn’t know much about this. All they knew was that there was some tension between Rhea, Kate, Lauren, and Carter.
Even though Carter was now their colleague, they didn’t dare ask him outright despite their curiosity. So, when the sparks started flying, everyone craned their necks to watch the drama unfold.
Nothing could beat a good catfight! They were all in for the show.
However, Kate held it together. She bit her lip, swallowed her anger, and shut her mouth. She hadn’t forgotten why she was sticking it out at Solaris Ventures.
Her goal was to cement her image as resilient and unyielding in Sawyer’s eyes. Then, she would leverage her colleagues‘ sympathy and sense of justice to ensure her grievances reached Damian. From there, Damian would pass it on to Sawyer.
Once that happened, all she had to do was wait for their engagement and marriage to go through. Then, she could leave Solaris Ventures behind to play her role as Sawyer’s wife.
In Kate’s version of events, Rhea, Lauren, and even Carter would be painted as workplace bullies who had tormented her. So, she could put up with this. She wouldn’t engage with Lauren, who was like a rabid dog.
But even if Kate stayed silent, Lauren was plenty capable of keeping the one–woman show going.
Seeing Kate ignore her, she crossed her arms, gave her a once–over, and clicked her tongue. “You’re a pro at putting up with shit, Ms. Pearson. It’s truly the makings of someone destined for big things. But you had better watch out–bottling up all that frustration might mess with your hormones, leading to some health issues, like cancer or something.
“You wouldn’t want that affecting your ability to have kids someday. But no worries, right? You could always adopt. You’re so thoughtful, and you’re always ready to take care of other people’s kids -like mine, for instance. You fed them tasty candy, didn’t you?”
Lauren’s tone dripped with sarcasm, and her every word was loaded with meaning. Each sentence

was a jab, chipping away at Kate’s defenses.
The thing with the candy—about how she’d given Arielle and Adrian the poisoned candy–was like a ticking time bomb that threatened to blow up her life at any moment.
Fortunately, it was time to board. However, Lauren dawdled at the back of the line. There was enough space ahead of her for a few other people to slip in, yet she deliberately didn’t move forward.
Kate didn’t want to stay there with her, so she moved to step past her and board the plane.
But then, Lauren cried, “Hey! Why are you cutting the line? Have you got no manners? Did you skip school to study how to poison people instead?”
