Kate's heart was already dark enough. She was on a path with no way back. Suddenly, she didn't want to ruin anyone else.
"I developed a crush on George years ago. But when I learned that he was in love with Rhea, jealousy consumed me. So, I reached out to Rhea's ex-husband, hoping that they'd get back together. I thought it would give me a shot." Kate's mind went blank as she numbly recounted the past that had been painful for her.
"Later, Rhea found out about it, and it drove a wedge between us. We stopped being friends. After that, I used George's mother's fondness for me to target Rhea. I manipulated Lauren Thayer, the woman who wrecked Rhea's marriage. I even used Rhea's stepchildren…
"I did all of this to hurt her. I wanted to drive a wedge between her and George. I messed with George's relationship with his mother; I even poisoned those two kids. And recently, I've been badmouthing Rhea behind her back at Solaris Ventures and turning our colleagues against her. These are all things I've done."
Getting it all out at once made Kate feel like a weight had been lifted off her chest. Even her heart felt lighter.
She hadn't fallen for Sawyer, of course. She just didn't want to lie to someone like him—someone who was willing to comfort her and let her lean on him.
Her heart was already rotten enough. She had laid bare all her secrets, her darkness, and her venom. Now, she was ready to face the consequences.
Only the wind could be heard on the other end of the line. The wind in Draventh was still cold and biting this time of year.
In that suffocating, endless silence, Kate smiled bitterly. "Sorry for bothering you…"
"Okay," Sawyer said. "But what does any of that have to do with me?"
His tone held no trace of shock or disgust.
