Lauren looked baffled. She asked, "What do you mean? What's the deal with us?"
Kate clenched her jaw slightly. She knew that even if she gave in and tried to compromise, Lauren and Seamus might not even agree. Worse, they would keep poking at the things she cared about and never let up.
She looked at the two of them and said softly, "You won't benefit in any way if you make me lose everything. You both know I'm the bad guy here. Aren't you afraid I'll drag you down with me if you push me over the edge?"
Her tone wasn't threatening. She sounded as though she was stating a fact.
Lauren shot back, "You weren't gonna let me off the hook, no matter what, were you?"
Kate couldn't think of a retort. Lauren continued, "You tricked and played me. Now that I'm onto you and giving you a taste of your own medicine, you're threatening me?"
She lay on her side, unable to move much. At this point, she was so worked up that she wanted to take a swing at Kate. However, all she had in her hand was half a croissant—that was hardly a weapon!
It was far from enough. A second later, an unpeeled boiled egg appeared in front of her. She grabbed it and hurled it at Kate's face, screaming, "Screw you! Who do you think you're threatening?"
Kate didn't see this coming. From Lauren's sudden outburst to Seamus handing her the egg to her throwing it—all of this happened in a mere two seconds.
Kate's eye was already injured, and the boiled egg was hard and heavy. It hit her square in the face after Lauren threw it with all the might she could muster. It hurt so much that Kate staggered back a step.
Seamus winced at the sound. For a fleeting moment, he almost felt bad for Kate, despite her jet-black heart. But what could he do? They each had their own loyalties.
Even after getting smacked in the face with an egg, Kate didn't make a sound. The calmness and endurance she showed—if she had put even half of it toward something worthwhile, she could be someone people admired.
Unfortunately, her vision and scope were too narrow. All Seamus could say was that some people were just born that way.
Kate opened her eyes again. Unexpectedly, she asked, "Do you still want to eat anything?"
Her sheer grit floored Lauren. She frowned and said, "No. Get out!"
