Kate was finally able to leave the hospital. Her colleagues had wrapped up their work, and Lauren was mobile enough to head back home. She couldn't stay in a foreign hospital forever.
Since Lauren was still nursing her injury, Damian made a point to have the staff upgrade her ticket to first class. She went straight from the economy cabin to the first-class one, and her seat was right behind Rhea and George.
Kate was also upgraded to first class. Damian had heard that Sawyer had sent two assistants abroad to help Kate out. As Sawyer's good friend, Damian wasn't about to let his buddy's special someone be shortchanged.
When they settled into their seats, Lauren made a point to greet Rhea and George, but Kate didn't. She sat quietly in the back without making a sound. Her gaze lingered on the seats in front of her as she fell deep into thought.
Lauren, who had once been a master at playing the innocent schemer, could spot jealousy or malice in a woman's eyes from a mile away. Shockingly, Kate's eyes held neither.
She seemed curious—curious about how Rhea and George interacted with each other. The flight was long enough for them to sleep through it, yet Lauren spent it watching Kate's every expression.
She wondered why Kate had suddenly changed her tune. She wondered if what Seamus had said was true—that Kate cared about how she looked in another man's eyes. Was it because of Sawyer?
Lauren couldn't resist the desire to gossip and broke Kate's reverie. "So, what's the deal with this Sawyer guy?"
Kate blinked in surprise, clearly caught off guard by the question. She eyed Lauren warily. "Why do you care?"
Lauren frowned. "I'm just curious."
If a decent guy was getting played by someone like Kate—or worse, falling for her sweet talk—Lauren would be pissed. Why should a rotten woman like Kate get a shot at redemption? She believed that Kate should be stuck envying and resenting others forever.
The two somewhat crazed women became locked in a silent showdown.
Kate's gaze flicked toward the seats in front as she enunciated, "He's good to me. He accepts all my flaws and is willing to stick by me through the toughest times."
