Kate hurriedly shook her head. "I thought you were busy with work."
Even if Sawyer did remember his offer, something as trivial as picking her up from the airport could've easily been delegated to a secretary. Yet, here he was in person.
Kate's heart fluttered in her chest.
Meanwhile, Lauren had stopped walking. Carter, who had been in economy class, also came up to them. The two discreetly observed the situation from a short distance away.
Lauren smirked. "That guy is quite good-looking. I just looked him up, and he's got some impressive skills. How could such a capable young man be so blind?"
She couldn't wrap her head around it. Sawyer was such a talented guy, yet he was getting involved with someone like Kate.
Carter shot her a quick glance and retorted, "Are you the better choice then?"
Lauren raised an eyebrow at him. "Well, you liked me. Otherwise, why did you have kids with me?"
He bristled with annoyance.
There were times when Carter would wonder about how good life would be if Lauren had never had those two kids. But as they grew older, he had grown used to them, and they depended on him more than ever. He gradually began to understand the responsibility that came with being a father.
He warned, "Those are my kids, not yours. Don't just claim them whenever you like."
He then turned to walk away.
Lauren was still in some pain from her back injury. She called out to him, "Wait a minute!"
Carter felt irritated. "What is it?"
After all these years of hating each other, there was no warmth and affection left between them.
Lauren pulled out 200 dollars from her wallet and dramatically tossed it at him. "I need to rest my back, but no one's around to help me back at my place. Can I crash at yours? Consider this my rent."
Truth be told, Lauren had no other options. Draventh was such a big and unfamiliar city to her, and Carter was the only person she knew.
She knew that she could've asked Holly, but the latter's hospital had been in turmoil since last year, and Holly had been busy trying to keep it afloat. Lauren suspected that George might have been behind it. Lauren figured that he probably wanted to get back at her and Holly.
