Chapter 69
Lauren froze for a second, then picked up the book cover. She stuttered, “B–But look how clean and neat these are.”
Alisha gently said, “Ms. Arielle and Mr. Adrian prefer covers with patterns.”
Lauren shot her a subtle glance, thinking that Alisha and Devan really had no sense of their place.
Smiling, Lauren said, “I know you’ve worked hard taking care of the children, and I appreciate it. But as a nanny, it’s best to stay quiet when your boss is speaking. Otherwise, the children might pick up bad habits like interrupting adults.”
Arielle immediately jumped to defend Alisha. “Ms. Berry is very kind to us.”
“Mom said that all the household staff are part of the family and should be respected,” Adrian repeated what Rhea had told them.
Although the kids no longer resisted Lauren as openly as before, there was a growing distance in their eyes.
To them, Lauren was an outsider. She had driven Rhea away along with Carter, and now she was even scolding Alisha.
Their dislike for Lauren quietly deepened.
Lauren clenched her teeth behind a strained smile. “Sweeties, everyone has their own way of doing things. Now that Rhea is gone, I’m your only mother. Listening to me is never wrong.

Arielle lowered her head and fell silent. She quickly finished her food and took Adrian back to their room.
But to their surprise, Lauren hobbled in after them with her crutch.
With Rhea out of the picture, she naturally had to step up and care for the kids. She said, “Sweeties, I bought you lots of new clothes. Let’s hang them up together, okay?”
As she spoke, a new maid suddenly entered the room.
Without saying a single word, she started pulling out all the clothes Rhea had bought for the children and tossed them onto the floor.
