I Quit Being a Stepmother (Cypress Gem) novel Chapter 81

Chapter 81

Carter’s tone was so soft when he spoke to Lauren just now. Carolyn thought that it was utterly disgusting.

She muttered, The kids need their mother? As if they were motherless all those years she was gone! What, Rhea’s sacrifices mean nothing? What a joke!

Rhea replied, Of course I’m not keeping the baby. But last night, I promised the kids that I’d take them on a trip before school starts. If I undergo the procedure now, I won’t be able to accompany them.

The doctor said that I have two weeks to get it done. The kids start school in a week anyway, so there’s still time.

Carolyn’s heart ached for Rhea. She reminded, Rhea, they’re not your kids.

I know.

Rhea smiled faintly. Whatever happens between adults stays between adults. The kids are innocent. They’ve called me Momfor six years. The least I can do is keep this one promise.

That afternoon, after finishing her checkup, Lauren noticed that Carter seemed distracted, as if he was in a hurry to leave.

Carter, why don’t I go with you to see Rhea? We can pick up some things that she’ll need. I do have experience with this, after all.

Carter hesitated. Are you sure you’re up for it?

Of course. I’ve got the wheelchair now.

Thank you, then. I appreciate it.

Frowning, Chloe said pointedly, Carter, remember Lauren’s sacrifices. She can barely walk, yet she’s still going to see Rhea with you.

Carter nodded. I won’t forget it.

Lauren reached for his hand and said, I don’t need you to remember what I do. I just want you to be happy.

They arrived at Westvale Villas with bags full of supplies.

Lauren gazed at the luxury villas ahead and remarked casually, Carter, these homes seem even more expensive than ours. How did Rhea afford a place here?
