Chapter 90
“It doesn’t matter,” Carter said flatly. He had no issue paying for the dinner.
But the fact that Rhea’s family chose Crown Mansion as the meeting spot soured his impression of them completely.
They weren’t the kind of people he would ever want to be connected with. Maybe he had been right not to insist on inviting Rhea’s family back when they first got married.
Before heading in, Carter got a message from Rhea. It read, “Sixth floor. Room G1111.”
At the front desk, a smiling hostess greeted them. “Welcome. May I see both of your work IDs, please?”
Carter didn’t have a work ID, so he handed over his state ID. “Room G1111,” he said.
This place had a system that could instantly retrieve someone’s registered assets by scanning their ID. If nothing came up, they would be a politician.
Access to different floors of the mansion depended entirely on the guests‘ status.
The hostess, Amber Byrne, returned Carter’s ID respectfully, holding it in both hands. “You’re all set, sir. Room G1111 is on the sixth floor.”
Lauren stepped forward to follow him in, but Amber stopped her. “Ma’am, I need to see your ID as well.”
Lauren didn’t have a work ID either.
Although Carter had arranged for her to be his secretary, he never truly treated her as one. So naturally, she didn’t have an official work ID.
Besides, why would she carry that with her? She never expected the Ravelles to go this far just to keep up their appearances by choosing a place like this for the meeting.
Lauren pointed at Carter and said, “I’m with him.”
Amber gave a polite but firm smile. “Even so, I still need to see your ID, ma’am.”
Left with no other choice, Lauren handed over her state ID.
About ten seconds later, Amber looked up, apologetic. “I’m sorry, ma’am. But you’re not eligible to enter.”
Lauren looked embarrassed. “Why not?”
More guests arrived behind them. Those who had been here before were already in the system and allowed in without re–verifying their identity.
At this moment, Lauren was the only one stopped at the entrance.
Some of the guests glanced at her out of the corner of their eyes. Their gazes carried a subtle trace of disdain.
People would often be stopped at the entrance here. It wasn’t exactly unusual.

Chapter 90
“You have no assets under your name and no valid work ID either. I’m truly sorry.”
Carter said, “I’ll cover her expenses. Is there a problem with that?”
+25 BONUS
“Are the two of you related? Married, perhaps?” Amber asked. “If so, please fill out the registration form.”
This policy existed for a reason. If someone without assets broke or damaged something inside the mansion, someone had to be on record to cover the cost.
However, friends didn’t count.
Lauren pressed her lips together, looking hurt. “Carter, why would Rhea choose this place? Is she trying to humiliate me on purpose?”
What right did Rhea have to humiliate her?
Carter’s expression darkened. “We’re married. I’ll be covering any of her expenses tonight.”
