Chapter 6
I let out a quiet, mocking laugh. “Aiden, you’re just the Hawthorne family’s lapdog–thinking you can play master now? Stay in your
lane.”
His face turned stormy. For years, Aiden couldn’t stand being reminded of the fact that he was a kept man. To protect his fragile pride, I’d even given him a vanity title–Vice President of Dominion Holdings. I never thought I was nursing a viper in my own house.”
“You could’ve played nice, Celeste,” he hissed. “This hospital answers to me now. I say the word, and your life’s over.”
He flicked a sharp glance toward the director. “Prep the OR. Get her inside.”
Then he turned back to me, crouching slightly, his tone laced with malice. “Tell me, Celeste–if something tragic were to happen to you during surgery, wouldn’t that make me the legal heir to everything you own?”
He didn’t wait for a response. At his signal, several guards rushed forward and grabbed me, dragging me toward the operating room.
Just then, loud crashes echoed from the elevator shaft. The doors slid open, and one of the hospital guards came flying out, blood gushing from his mouth as he landed at Aiden’s feet.
“Mr. Whitlock!” he gasped. “We’re under attack–hundreds of men have surrounded the building! There are helicopters circling the roof!”
Before Aiden could process the words, a tactical unit in black stormed out of the elevator. In seconds, they had him surrounded.
Vanessa’s face twisted with fury. “Do you even know who my husband is? This is Dominion Holdings territory! You people are finished!”
Her voice barely echoed before one of the operatives kicked her squarely in the knee. The bone snapped with a sickening crack. She collapsed, screaming, tears streaming down her face as she instinctively shielded her belly.
“You’ll regret this!” she shrieked. “You dared touch me? My husband will destroy every one of you!”
She turned to Aiden, seeking support–only to find him pale and trembling, his legs refusing to hold him up.
Still trying to bluff, Aiden clenched his jaw and glared at the leader. “Do you have any idea who I am? I’m the VP of Dominion Holdings. Lay a hand on me, and you’ll regret it.”
That’s when Nathan stepped forward–my assistant, blood splattered across his sleeve, eyes burning with contempt.
“A kept man acting like he’s a big shot?” he sneered. “Cute.”
He dusted off his jacket and looked Aiden straight in the eye. “Go ahead. Call the company. See if anyone still answers to Vice President Whitlock”
