Chapter 9
Vanessa looked up at Aiden, her face pale and contorted in pain.
“Take me to another hospital,” she pleaded. “I can’t hold out much longer.”
Aiden scoffed coldly. “You knew the OB–GYN staff here had already been dismissed. So now you’re faking pain to force me to take you elsewhere? What, hoping to escape on the way?”
Disgust twisted his face. He suddenly kicked her hard in the side, sending her crashing to the ground.
A sickening thud echoed through the corridor.
Then came a wet, sloshing sound.
Vanessa’s eyes went wide with panic as she stared at the growing puddle beneath her.
“My water just broke,” she gasped. “Aiden, please–you have to get me to another hospital! The baby’s coming!”
Aiden glanced at her soaked dress, a flicker of panic flashing through his eyes.
I let out a low chuckle. “Weren’t you only five months along? No way your water broke this early. What, pretending you’re in labor now?”
Hearing that, Aiden’s face darkened. He stepped back, wrinkling his nose.
“Seriously, Vanessa? You’re desperate enough to pull that kind of stunt?”
Vanessa clutched her belly and tried to crawl toward him. The hallway now reeked of blood.
“I’m serious, Aiden. My water really broke. I’m carrying your son. Are you really going to let me die like this?”
Aiden slammed his shoe down on her hand, his face twisted in disdain.
“Do you really think I’d believe a word you say at this point?”
Tears mixed with sweat on her face. She looked around wildly, eyes filled with desperation.
“Please! Someone help me! Help my baby! He’s coming–I can feel it!”
But I remained still, watching her writhe with the same cold detachment I once saw in her eyes.
“Anyone who touches her,” I said calmly, “will be making an enemy of Hawthorne Group.”
Her outstretched hand froze midair. Panic drained the last color from her face..
I gave her a chilling smile.
“Familiar, isn’t it? That line. That moment. Do you remember how it felt when you said it to me?”
Vanessa forced herself to sit upright, then crawled toward me on her knees.
“Please,” she begged. “I was lied to–I didn’t know. Aiden promised me everything. He said he was the richest man in Ravenshire, that our son would inherit it all. I thought I was the one he loved… I didn’t know I was just being played.”
Aiden stormed over and yanked her back by the arm.
“Shut your filthy mouth! Trying to turn my wife against me?”
He threw her aside like trash. “I used you for one thing–to give me a son. The only woman I’ve ever loved is my wife.”
He turned to me, as if waiting for praise. “Babe, I swear–Vanessa was nothing. You’re the only one who matters.”
Vanessa struggled to her feet, trembling from head to toe.
“Don’t pretend to be loval now. Aiden If woul
