Grandparents – Part I

Juniper was too exhausted to even notice how the plane bumped along the runway as it landed. Despite Phineas‘ words the evening before about how they were going to sleep, it seemed she’d awaken beasts in all three men were her demands. Their beastly appetites were voracious, and she was officially concerned she’d bitten off more than she could chew.

“Come on beautiful,” Phineas‘ voice was soft as he curled his hands under her knees and behind her back and lifted her from her seat on the plane to carry her off.

The flight attendant gave a smile at her as Juniper grumbled she was too tired to walk. Juniper considered the poor woman was probably traumatized by the screaming Juniper did after her men did the things they did to her. All Juniper knew was an hour ago when she’d been brought back out to the cabin of the plane and set into the chair with three men fussing over her, the flight attendant was bringing her orange juice and acetaminophen and a warm blanket, all delivered with a very sympathetic smile.

The first thing she noticed as they exited the aircraft was the heat. It bore down on her with oppressive, stifling and sticky.

The second thing she noticed was how the sun felt too bright, and she immediately buried her face in Phineas‘ shoulder to avoid the glare.

Phineas, Beni, and Adil all tucked sunglasses over their eyes before they’d reached the bottom step and she was anpayed19:19 she’d not grabbed hers from her carry–on bag.

The third thing she noticed, more irritating than the first two, was how all three men started speaking Spanish the moment their feet his Spanish soil. They were trading words rapid fire, and she wanted to smack the three of them.

“That’s rude,” she mumbled from where she shielded her eyes from the sun. “Why do you all know Spanish.”

“Sweetheart, my last name is Perez. Beni’s last name is Rojas. It’s almost required.” Phineas juggled her in his arms as he strode purposefully towards the waiting car which seemed more minivan. “And all we said was we needed to get you home and into bed because we overdid it and we’re concerned.”

“I’m fine. I need a nap is all.”

“You need calories, a change of clothing into something less heavy and a good sleep.” Phineas corrected.

“Don’t we need to go through customs?”

“You didn’t see the men who boarded the aircraft when we landed? Customs officials come to you when you have enough money, babe.” Phineas nodded to the driver of the car. “Why do you think I kept your passport with me?”

“You were all speaking Spanish. How was I to know what they were doing?”

“Also, one of them was Beni’s cousin.”

“You have family here, Beni?”

“I do. When we were teenagers, Adil, Phineas, and I came here to spend time with family. Phineas has family in Barcelona. Mine are more from around here.”

“Where is here?”

“San Sebastián,” Beni grinned. “Phineas loved it so much he bought a house here with his first trust fund. His grandparents were pissed he went to the other side of the country to set up a home.”

“I’m an outdoorsy guy and this has the best beaches bar none in all of Spain, probably all of Europe. I paid top dollar for my little piece of paradise. I can’t believe I almost lost it to Denise.”

“I can’t believe your grandfather made you put it in the prenup.”

Phineas grunted his own dissatisfaction at his grandfather’s behavior and slid into the seat. “I love the old man but

sometimes he’s a pain in the ass. He owns a mansion in

Barcelona, sweetheart but he lives in Canada. He spends most of the winters here now.”

He fixed a seatbelt around her lap and then pulled his own on.

“Why would he move to Toronto when he lived here?” she looked around confused. “It’s gorgeous here.”

“His parents immigrated when he was a small boy. The home they lived in when he was a boy was not the same one he has now. They were wealthy but my great–grandfather wanted to be wealthier. Also, they moved before World War II and Europe was very unsettled at the time. My great–grandparents 345

“Oh.” She frowned.

“My grandfather fought in World War II.”

“How old is he?”

“Ninety–four.”

“He’s ninety–four?”

“And quite possibly the most virile man you’d ever meet. He makes me look weak. He was one of the youngest in his battalion.” Phineas smiled. “He’s the best person I ever met in terms of loving me completely and there isn’t much he could ask of me I wouldn’t do. Hence my marriage to Denise. He wanted her protected on behalf of his best friend and I thought I was repaying him and her grandfather for all the years of mentorship and love. I thought at first I was doing the right thing. Ahead of the wedding, for about six months, we went on one dinner date a week to get to know one another and every single one of them was worse than the last but I couldn’t let him down. He was really pissed off to find out her true colors.”

“Is he angry at you at all?”
