She nodded at his words and then turned her attention to the scenery passing by. Juniper didn’t want to admit it stung that he was hiding her relationship from the most important person in his life. It made her feel dirty and tawdry, despite his explanation.

“Hey,” he kissed her forehead, “please don’t overthink this.”

“I’m not.” She shrugged. She wasn’t overthinking it. She knew exactly what he meant. “It’s very pretty here.”

“Not as pretty as you,” Adil quipped.

“Their families are Spanish but why do you speak it so easily?” she changed the subject.

“My mother is Latina, Juniper.” He laughed. “Bennett might be my last name, but my mother’s family’s name was Suarez.”

She crinkled her nose up, “really? She doesn’t seem Latina.”

“What does she seem?” Adil was laughing now.

“Pretentious?” Beni offered.

“Snobby?” Phineas countered.

“Like British Royalty,” Juniper shrugged. “She reminded me of someone who curtseys, drinks tea with her pinky up,” she demonstrated the pose, “and crosses her legs at the ankles like 19 Princess Kate. She’s regal.”

“What?”

“Only you would see her patronizing behavior as regal,” Adil leaned forward in the seat where he faced her and kissed her forehead, “you’re adorable.”

“That,” she pointed at him, “sounded patronizing.”

“You have a good heart, Juniper. My mother is one of those people who means well but tends to think way too much about appearances and what other people think. She’s also from one of the wealthiest families in Mexico. There was very much a class system where she grew up, and she is very classist and very elitest. She loves me, there is no doubt, but her love is very much conditional on whether or not I embarrass her. I am a

walking embarrassment. Her parents to this day are very much about sneering down on everyone beneath their social standing. They shoot lovely comments my way each time I visit about how much of a disappointment I am. I’m incredibly intelligent, not quite as smart as Phineas but I’m smart. They feel my life is wasted doing what I do. The thing is, I love what I do. I don’t need to make money. There is so much money sitting in my accounts doing nothing. I may as well do something I love, do it well and be happy than to figure out ways to expand a fortune I’m never going to use in twenty lifetimes. They think I lack drive and ambition. I don’t. I simply lack the desire to be anything other than happy.”

“Your family sound like assholes.” The words spilled from her lips before she could stop them.

“Because I’m in Spain with the prettiest woman on earth and she’s exhausted from making love all night and she’s still, despite her eyes being smudged and shifting uncomfortably in her seat because she needs a good soak in a hot bath,” he winked, “is still as feisty and communicative as ever and it makes me appreciate all the more how much I’m glad I live my life the way I want. If I hadn’t become a PI I would never have found you, Juniper and I am grateful and happy.” He smiled, “for the record, both sets of my grandparents also don’t know about us. They will have all kinds of horrible things to say. I’m not ready or willing to expose you to their shit and they will descend like flies on a pile of it the minute they know.”

She looked at Beni curiously, “and you?”

“My entire family knows. My mother told her parents and my grandmother choked on her tea, apparently but then she called me later to tell me she loves me no matter what and asked me to make sure if we have a girl someday she wants her name in there.”

“What about your grandfather?”

“They actually moved back here a few years ago. They invited us to dinner tomorrow night once they knew we were coming. My paternal grandmother had a brother who was gay, and he died by suicide when they were younger. She is very liberal minded, and she wants only for me to be happy. She can’t wait to meet you.”
