Statistically Impossible Part I

Entering the house where Beni’s grandparents lived, Juniper was surprised to see how modest the home was. It was clearly the home of someone well–to–do, but it wasn’t as opulent as Phineas‘ villa. Heck it was not even as fancy as her condo. Yet, the place was comfortable, warm, and inviting. It felt like a hug of nostalgia on a warm summer night, and she was immediately gravitating to a wall of photos.
There were many pictures of Beni and his friends and family. She pointed at one, “this is your sister?”
“Yes. Mireia. She’s been really busy with some things but she’s excited to meet you.” He put his hand on her shoulder, “speaking of people excited to meet you.” He turned her in the direction of a living area. “Come. I have two people I very much want to introduce you to.”
Entering the living area, Juniper barely stifled her laugh as an energetic older man hobbling on a cane came barreling into the room and lunged right at Beni.
“Benicio!” he exclaimed excitedly and wrapped his arms around
Beni.
They exchanged long hugs and pats on the back before another woman came into the room with not much more control than the man ahead of her. She set off in a flurry of Spanish and was gesticulating wildly while she openly wept at the sight of Beni. She was patting his face and then checking him all over as if she wege inspecting him for injuries.

“Aren’t they adorable,” Adil asked in her car. “When I was a little I was so jealous of Beni’s grandmother. She is the quintessential Spanish abuela. She’s telling him he’s gotten thinner since the last time he visited, and she wonders if he grew
again.”
“He’s thirty–five. Didn’t he stop growing a long time ago?”
“He’s always a little boy to her,” Adil snickered.
“Abuelo, Abuela,” Beni stepped sideways so Juniper was visible, “I want you to meet someone very special to us.” He took Juniper’s hand, “this is Juniper. We met a little while ago and I love her very much.” He smiled at Juniper. “Juniper, these are my abuelo and abuela Rojas.”
“It’s so nice to meet you,” the woman spoke heavily accented English. She leaned sideways to Beni and whispered something which made the three men chuckle, her grandfather’s eyes
widen and his cheek flush and Juniper to wonder very curiously what she’d said.
“Abuela somehow thought you would be much bigger.”
“Why?”
“My mother told her it would take a lot of women to handle three men and apparently you are a lot of woman. She took it literally and thought it meant you were plus sized.”
“Oh!” she giggled and put her hands over her cheeks as they flamed with embarrassment. “Jumping right in, I guess?”

“you do not hide your pretty face as if ashamed. You call me Abuela and him Abuelo. You are home with us, and you never need to pretend to be anything but who you are. You should be proud three men want you enough to make agreements to work through a committed relationship. Back in my youth, my husband and I had many partners.”
Beni choked as if an invisible force was strangling him as Phineas and Adil both gasped incredulously.
“Perhaps let’s not divulge all the family secrets to our grandson,” the older man seemed as uncomfortable his grandson was hearing things about him as the grandson was in hearing them.
“There is nothing to be ashamed of.” The woman scoffed, “in the seventies in Toronto, we went to many parties where you simply dropped keys in a bowl.”
“Oh dear,” Juniper giggled as the woman draped her arm over Juniper’s shoulder and led her out of the house to an outside dining area. Juniper looked around and noted that the garden where they were going to dine was separated from the neighbors by a fence with a gate in it. She smiled as she considered they put up the fence but made sure it was accessible.
“There was one time,” Beni’s grandmother continued, “a very handsome man at one of those parties tried to buy me from my husband. He offered a hundred thousand dollars, and it was a lot of money back then.”
“What did you do?” Juniper was captured by the story.

sale for any price and then we made out right in front of him.”
“Wow.” Juniper met Beni’s horrified gaze with a grin. “Your abuela is fun, Beni.”
“I like her better when she’s telling me stories about the things my father did wrong. This is scandalous,” he kissed his grandmother’s check as he took a seat across from them at the
table.
