Juniper was holding Beni’s elbow as she was escorted into the mediation room. Her hands were trembling as she noted Kyst and his lawyer were already seated in the room. It hadn’t mattered how much love and attention they’d given her over the weekend to make her feel secure, in this moment she was nervous and on edge.
Kyst immediately jumped to his feet and rushed towards her, “Juni, baby, oh my god, you’re here.”
“Sit down, Mr. Kennedy,” Beni’s voice was colder than ice. “Do not approach my client without her consent.”
“She’s my wife,” Kyst snapped at him.
“Not for much longer,” Beni retorted with a smirk. He pulled her hand from the crook of his elbow and rested his hand on her low back, “come sit, Juniper.”
Kyst didn’t miss the intimate touch and growled furiously, “Why the fuck are you touching her?”
“I’m a gentleman, Mr. Kennedy. I’m escorting my client to her chair.”
“Don’t fucking touch her!” Kyst’s voice rose an octave.
Juniper looked at Beni and reached up and squeezed his hand, “he’s scaring me, Mr. Rojas.” She batted her lashes at Beni,

“after what my friend saw last week when he,” she fanned her face as if she were trying not to cry, “you saw the video. Now he’s yelling here and I’m scared.”
“What the fuck are you talking about? Juni! You know I’d never hurt you baby,” Kyst tried to get around Beni who moved like a professionally trained bodyguard and blocked his access to Juniper.
“My client is on the cusp of filing a restraining order against your client, Mr. Whittaker,” Beni looked at Kyst’s lawyer. “Don’t make this mediation meeting turn into another bit of evidence to set before the judge. Control your client or we leave and move straight to the local precinct to file for protective services.”
“Why the hell would my wife need a restraining order?”
“Kyst,” his lawyer hissed, “sit down.”
The mediator took this moment to walk into the room. “Let’s please sit. There is a lot to go through.”
Beni took the seat between Juniper and the mediator who sat at the head of the table. Kyst sat opposite Juniper and his fingers flexed on the tabletop like he was desperate to touch her.
“I want to make it clear,” Beni started the moment everyone was sat down, “my client is here to mediate division of assets, but reconciliation is not on the table for her.”
As if he didn’t hear what Beni said, Kyst tapped his fingers impatiently. “You look beautiful,” Kyst whispered across the 2/5

table. “Are you okay? I’m sorry about the baby, Juniper. I wish you’d told me you were pregnant. I would have been there.”
“You mean instead of banging Denise on our sofa?”
“Juniper,” Beni put his hand on top of hers on the table and patted it softly, “you don’t need to respond unless the mediator asks you a direct question, otherwise, everything comes through me.”
“I will reiterate this,” the mediator gave her a nod. “It will be best if we keep the anger off the table for a moment and review the information in front of us. My name is Susan Laurent. We are here to see if there is a way to avoid appearing in front of a judge.”
“Before we move into this, Ms. Laurent,” Beni pulled a thick file from his attaché bag, “I need to present additional information which has been pulled together by a private investigator who is employed by my client to gauge the depths of Mr. Kennedy’s betrayal.”
“I made a mistake.” Kyst cleared his throat. “We can go to counselling.”
“No.” Juniper looked at the mediator. “Even if he’d only slept with her one time, it’s an unforgivable offence to me. You can order me to counselling. You can order me to do whatever, and I will comply, but I will never, not ever, forgive him for what he did. All we are doing here is dragging out the inevitable. I simply want my half of the savings. That’s all.”

Beni cleared his throat and shot her a look, reprimanding her for talking.
“Mrs. Kennedy,” Susan spoke.
“Please call me Juniper,” she asked quietly as she shot Beni an apologetic look. He squeezed her hand gently in response and she reveled in Kyst’s glare at the movement. “Suck it, motherfucker,” she thought angrily. She was surprised at how furious she felt as she sat at the table seeing Kyst with his big watery eyes as if he were the one who was hurting over his betrayal.
“What’s in the file?” Mr. Whittaker, Kyst’s lawyer asked with a quiet sigh.
