Beni squeezed Juniper’s hand on the table as if begging her not to respond and she could taste blood in her mouth as she bit the insides of her cheeks to stop from jumping over the table to smack sense into the man she’d known most of her life.

Instead, she looked at the Beni gratefully and nodded.

“As you can see, Ms. Laurent,” Beni spoke, “Mr. Whittaker’s client is not remorseful. He cheated on his wife three times physically, and this is only what we were able to find in a short window of time. While I think it would be impactful for us to peruse the contents of this file, the truth of the matter is my client has already seen it in detail. Excruciatingly, she went through it page by page and saw every transgression the PI could document in the time he was allotted at her request. Now, I know, he has some kind of delusion wherein he thinks can emotionally manipulate her into believing all of this,” he waved at the two files sitting on the desk, “was for her benefit but my client is smart. My client is not acting impulsively or irrationally. Her husband cheated, physically, emotionally and all the ways in between. Not once. Not twice. Not even three times. He did it over and over and over again. It is not in her best interests to maintain a marriage with a man who cannot give her the same level of commitment she gave him.”

The mediator nodded, “let’s move onto the assets.”

“No!” Kyst argued. “We need to find a way to resolve this situation.”

“Mr. Kennedy, there is no way to resolve this situation short of you traveling back in time and deciding not to be a cheater.” Beni said bluntly.

“I didn’t cheat!” Kyst yelled and stood up, slamming his hands on the table. “I didn’t fucking cheat.”

“What do you think you did?” Juniper glared at him. “What do you think you did when you crawled into bed with other women and broke the vows we made to remain true to only one another? What do you call it?”

“I didn’t love them. I didn’t even like them. It was a job.”

“So, you’re a hooker now?” Juniper spat at him.

“My boss pushed me.”

“You could have told me from the beginning he wanted you to whore yourself out and I would have supported you going to work somewhere else. However, and I need you to hear me, you made choices to put your penis inside other women after you promised I’d be the only one. You also cannot, under any circumstance, blame anyone else for what you did. Most importantly, I have the audio, I listened to what you said to Denise when you railing her on my sofa. You were only fucking her since I wasn’t putting out enough because the doctor’s recommendations for us to make a baby were to only have sex during peak ovulation times. “Phineas Perez set us up.” Kyst hissed. “Don’t you see it, Juni? Don’t you see what he did? He needed to get rid of her, so he used me.”

“Oh, fuck off,” she rolled her eyes and swung her head impatiently. “Are you really this delusional? You need psychiatric help if you are Kyst. His wife was cheating on him all the time. He had the proof. He has the proof. He didn’t need me to do anything to catch you. You weren’t the first person she stepped out on him with. Oh, you should know,” she made a show, “she lied about being allergic to latex. She’s not. I hope for your sake, the doctor who put in her IUD didn’t falsify chart records,” she looked to the mediator, “just so you know, he told her if they were going to have sex, she needed an IUD and he paid for it. He didn’t just fall into her bed. He planned it. He booked time in advance to begin working from home. He then had sex with her in our house, unprotected, without a condom, putting me and our unborn child at risk.” She wiped away an angry tear. “I’m done. I can’t do this. Beni, do I really need to be here?” she looked at him pleadingly. “I changed my mind.”

“About?” Beni asked quietly.

“If he’s going to contest everything, give him what he wants. He wants all the savings. Give him the savings. He wants the car, well, he can have it. I don’t want to do this anymore. I just want out.” She felt fat tears streaming down her face. “I want out and I can’t do this.”

“Can you give us five?” Beni asked the mediator who nodded, and he tugged her from her chair, pulled her into the hallway

She wasn’t sure how long she cried but her face was hurting from the congestion, and her head was starting to throb.

“I hate him. I hate him so fucking much. How the fuck can he sit there and lie like he does? Who the hell is that man in there because he sure as hell isn’t the guy I thought I married?”

“I know, Sunshine,” Beni rubbed her back as she sniffled against his chest. “I don’t understand his mindset. I think he’s compartmentalized or rationalized his behavior for so long that he’s convinced himself he’s not at fault.”

“And to blame Phineas? What the hell is that?” she sniffed against Beni’s lapel.

“Desperate.” Beni pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped her tears gently and then pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. “I know you want to just give up and walk away with nothing but Phineas will have my head if I agree to such a thing. So will his dad, my dad and Adil’s dad. They all were in a group call this morning telling me to make sure this fucker pays for hurting you. You’ll get what you deserve, Juniper, not a penny less.”

“But I don’t need it,” she whispered poutingly.

“If you don’t take what you deserve, it means he gets away unpunished. Do you really want this to happen?”
