Amelia headed back to the private dining room.

Ryan didn’t show up again for the rest of the night, but dinner still ended on a high note. Almost everyone was in good spirits—some maybe a little too much, judging by the number of coworkers who’d lined up rides home before the night was over.

Amelia had a couple of drinks herself, but thankfully Belle had stayed sober. As they were getting ready to leave, the deputy director called Amelia over. He started off with the usual flattery, going on about how talented she was. But it didn’t take long before he got to his real point: trying to figure out what was going on between her and Ryan.

Amelia could only force a smile. “Mr. Packman and I went to college together. We’re just old classmates, really. Nothing else, I promise.”

That seemed to satisfy him. He patted her shoulder and threw out a few more polite comments before heading off when his driver arrived.

Belle caught up to Amelia, muttering under her breath, “Those people… If you were actually dating Ryan, they’d probably be lining up to toast you like royalty.”

The two of them laughed as they made their way toward the parking lot.

But as soon as they stepped out of the restaurant, Amelia spotted some all-too-familiar faces on the steps. The smile vanished from her eyes in an instant.

Belle followed her gaze and practically rolled her eyes out of her head. “Oh, look. Isn’t that your unlucky ex and his secretary-turned-mistress? What are the chances?” She’d already noticed Kristen hanging onto Clive’s arm like a bad habit.

Belle snorted, “Good thing I didn’t eat too much. Otherwise, I’d lose my dinner right now.”

Amelia looked away, her voice flat. “Let’s just go.”

Luckily, Belle’s car was parked on the other side, so they wouldn’t have to cross paths. But wanting to avoid someone didn't mean they’d let you.

Amelia had barely set foot off the steps when Clive zeroed in on her. Even from behind, in that striking red dress, she was impossible to miss.
