Two shocking revelations came to light in quick succession.
Amelia was married—and, apparently, not treating her husband well.
Amelia’s fingers tightened on the documents in front of her. She almost wanted to smack Daniel in the face with them. He was the only one running his mouth.
A heavy silence settled over the room as everyone tried to process the news. Daniel, utterly unfazed, continued, “But as far as I know, Amelia isn’t unreasonable. There must be some misunderstanding here, right?”
The assistant principal, sharp as ever, immediately caught on. “Exactly, Mr. David. I’m sure there’s been a mistake. Look—Mr. Campbell took time out of his busy schedule to check on the new library he’s funding, and he walks in to find you two arguing? Whatever’s going on with Amelia, you’re a teacher—you really should have more patience.”
Mr. David opened his mouth, but not a word came out. He hadn’t expected Amelia to have such powerful backing that the assistant principal would intervene on her behalf. When authority speaks, you fall in line, no matter how upset you are.
Daniel glanced over at Amelia with a pleasant, gentlemanly smile. “Amelia, what was it you needed again? Your graduation records? Mr. David’s got an eye for detail—I’m sure he’ll find them in no time.”
With someone important watching, Mr. David had no choice but to get to work, even if he'd rather not. His face dark with frustration, he stalked over to the mountain of files. As he passed Tina, he tugged at her sleeve, signaling for her to help.
Daniel casually pulled out a chair and set it behind Amelia. “Here, have a seat.”
He gestured to the others as well. “You all might as well sit down. This could take a while.”
Once Amelia had settled, Daniel brought a chair over and sat down right beside her.
The new library was warm, and it didn’t take long for everyone to work up a sweat searching through the records. Daniel, however, made no move to leave. Instead, he watched like a supervisor, making it impossible for Mr. David to slack off.
Tina was fuming as she searched, her frustration mounting. She’d tried to make things difficult for Amelia, but ended up being outmaneuvered instead. She rifled angrily through the files, her new manicure catching on the edge of the desk and cracking a nail.
Daniel seemed to anticipate the move and leaned away from Tina—straight toward Amelia. He was tall and broad-shouldered, so as he shifted, Amelia had no choice but to stand up quickly, nearly losing her balance. Daniel’s reflexes were quick; he caught her around the waist.
“Careful, Amelia.”
“…”
Amelia was exasperated. He’d clearly moved toward her on purpose, yet somehow made it look like he was gallantly saving her.
Tina, meanwhile, missed her mark entirely, caught her hand on the edge of a chair, and landed on the floor in a spectacularly awkward heap.
Mr. David thought about helping her up, but remembered her antics from earlier and decided she could fend for herself.
