Chapter 56
Heather dragged Beckett up to the hospital rooftop.
Rain had just passed, leaving puddles scattered across the rooftop. After making sure they were alone, Heather finally spoke.
“Have you lost your mind? Still thinking about treating Edith? After
everything that woman’s done to me, to the Vance family-you must have water on the brain from that downpour!”
Heather, who usually doted on her son, couldn’t hold back her anger this time. She lashed out at Beckett, her frustration spilling over.
Her feelings were crystal clear. Edith couldn’t even have children-what was the point? And all the humiliation she’d suffered from Cora last time was Edith’s fault, too.
She wasn’t about to let this go.
But Beckett seemed bewitched, muttering to himself, “Even if Edith can’t have kids, at least she can still ovulate! We’ll have a child of our own, I just know it. I don’t want this kind of life anymore, I can’t stand it…”
Seeing her son so obsessed nearly broke Heather. She stamped her foot, voice rising, “You could have any woman you want! Why are you so desperate today? Tell me-did you sneak off to see Edith again? What did that little temptress say to you?”
Beckett stared up at the pitch-black sky, thinking back to what had happened out in the suburbs. He sounded almost defeated. “Mom, Edith isn’t marrying some old man-he’s young, strong. I can’t just stand by and watch my wife marry someone else!”
Just picturing Edith living under the same roof as another man was enough to drive him mad.
Heather tried to calm him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “So what if he’s young and strong? Is he any match for our family, for the Vances?”

Chapter 56
She kept coaxing him, trying to soothe his nerves. “If he’s so young and strong, don’t you think he’ll care even more if his wife can’t have children? Right now, they probably don’t know about Edith’s condition. But when they find out, do you really think he’ll still want her?”
Beckett was finally starting to come to his senses. Jaw clenched, he asked, “But what if he finds out after they’re already married?”
Heather let out a long sigh. “Then they’ll get divorced, of course! By then, Salome’s baby will be born, and if Edith gets thrown out, and you still want her, she’ll be begging to come back to the Vance family. But let’s make one thing clear-if she wants back in, she’ll have to apologize to me first.”
At last, the tension eased from Beckett’s brow-Heather’s words had
calmed him.
He’d convinced himself that man would never last with Edith.
Even if they got married, sooner or later the guy would kick her out.
