Chapter 57
Chapter 57
He frowned. “Mom, are there any really expensive neighborhoods with villas in Northcrest Eastborough?”
At the mention of the suburbs, Heather answered without hesitation, “Villas in the suburbs? Please. Call it a ‘villa’ if you want to dress it up, but let’s be honest-it’s just a self-built house, isn’t it?”
Heather’s words eased the worry and suspicion lingering in Beckett’s
mind.
She was right. For a woman like Edith, divorced and remarrying, just finding someone her own age was a blessing-how could her new husband possibly be wealthy?
People with money these days aren’t idiots.
As if she could read Beckett’s thoughts, Heather arched an eyebrow, her tone dripping with scorn. “What’s this? Is Edith getting married to someone in Eastborough?”
Her whole face was etched with disdain and ridicule.
Heather had always been proud; in all of Northcrest, there were few families who could measure up to the Vances.
With those kinds of resources, what kind of woman couldn’t a man marry? Why on earth would he pick Edith?
“Honestly, she used to be part of the Vance family, and now she’s fallen so far. It’s almost pitiful, really.”
She said it was pitiful, but her expression was pure satisfaction.
That smug pride-she couldn’t have hidden it if she tried.
With his doubts finally put to rest, Beckett felt clear-headed again. “Mom, let the driver take you home to rest. I’ll stay here with Salome.”
A hint of fatigue finally showed on Heather’s face. “It’s gotten far too late. I am tired.”

She seemed to remember something. “Oh, by the way, I heard you’ve wrapped up that deal for the downtown project?”
Beckett’s face brightened with confidence at the mention of work. “It’s settled. We’re just waiting to sign the contract. As soon as their group is available, I’ll go get it done, and that’ll be the end of it.”
Heather gave his shoulder an approving pat. “Well done. Once that contract’s signed, the company’s annual targets will all be met.”
She let out a sigh. “I really am getting old. I don’t have your knack for getting things done. The Hawksley Group has a reputation for being picky—I can’t believe you closed the deal so quickly. Before long, you’ll have to take over the company completely.”
Beckett took her hand. “Mom, it’s all because you laid such a solid foundation. If you still have the energy, the company’s still yours to run.”
Heather smiled. “I don’t have that kind of energy anymore. Once Salome’s baby is born, I’ll be busy enough with grandkids and traveling the world. I can leave the company to you and not worry at all.”
