It was obvious—Isabella Austin was doing this on purpose.
She shifted her stance, subtly angling her body to show off her slender, graceful figure. Standing side by side, the contrast between her and Emily Blair couldn’t have been starker.
Isabella and Emily were worlds apart.
Emily could just make out the hushed voices around her, people whispering about how Isabella looked better, carried herself with more poise, how she outshone Emily in every way.
But Emily didn’t so much as flinch. She simply nodded to Isabella, then strode confidently through the crowd and into the mansion. Without hesitation, she stepped right into the glare of the media’s cameras, planted herself in front of Kevin Lane, and with a bright, unforced smile, declared, “Grandpa, wishing you health and happiness for years to come!”
Kevin Lane didn’t return her smile. Instead, his frown deepened, his tone turning stern.
“You came dressed like that? Go change—now. I don’t want people thinking we mistreat you here.”
Ever since Emily had been thrown out by the new family patriarch, he hadn’t bothered to hide his disdain for her. He was every bit as cold as she remembered from her previous life.
Maybe that’s just how the Lane family was—distant, detached.
But why should Emily change? She wanted the reporters to see exactly how she was treated here.
She kept up her cheerful act, pretending not to notice his displeasure. “Grandpa, I’m fine in this. It’s comfortable, really.”
“Oh, by the way, when you kicked me out last time, I left a few things in my old room. Mind if I go and grab them?”
She made sure to emphasize the words “kicked me out.”
The reporters’ eyes lit up, cameras already rising, but the Lane family’s butler shot them a single icy glare and they instantly backed down.
