Someone stepped forward, curiosity lighting up her face. “Mrs. Lane, is there good news to share?”
Diana Harris looped her arm through Isabella Austin’s and grinned, tossing a teasing glance at Andrew Lane as he approached. “Ask him,” she said playfully. “I don’t know anything myself.”
All at once, the crowd’s attention shifted to Andrew Lane, their eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Today, Andrew was dressed in a perfectly tailored white suit. His hair was neatly slicked back, emphasizing his sharp brow and distinguished features. His eyes were dark, calm, and distant—his entire bearing radiated quiet, effortless elegance.
It was easy to see why Andrew Lane’s looks and wealth drew attention wherever he went, but there was something about his reserved air that kept people at arm’s length. That cool detachment seemed to melt away only when Isabella Austin was at his side.
Standing together, the two of them made a striking pair—the very picture of charm and grace.
A middle-aged woman from the crowd stepped forward, her smile warm as she struck up a conversation. “Mr. Lane, is there something special between you and Ms. Austin? Are we to expect an announcement soon?”
She had an only daughter—her pride and joy—and had long set her sights on Andrew Lane as the ideal son-in-law. Handsome, accomplished, refined, and from an impeccable family—he was the most eligible bachelor in their social circle.
She wasn’t the only one. Many families with daughters in society watched Andrew Lane closely, all secretly hoping for a match that would link them to the Lane family. There was hardly a family present that hadn’t considered a discreet introduction, dreaming that their daughter might be the one.
Andrew’s sudden reunion with his first love, and now this, had shattered the hopes of many mothers and daughters who’d sought a connection with the Lanes.
All around the room, young women who’d come with their parents gazed at Andrew with barely concealed longing, cheeks tinged pink, too shy to do more than watch him from afar.
But the elegant woman refused to give up so easily. She couldn’t believe that Andrew Lane, still so young, was truly spoken for, or that her daughter had lost her chance.
