Kevin Lane, who had stayed silent until now, finally stepped forward. His cloudy eyes fixed on her with a heavy, unyielding gaze, and though his voice was frail with age, it carried the weight of command.

"You’re not leaving. I haven’t given you permission."

Emily Blair’s lips curved in a half-smile, her tone dry. "What is this, Alcatraz? Once you’re in, you can’t get out?"

Amelia Lane, clearly annoyed, spoke up. "Grandpa, why should she stay? She’s not even part of our family."

Kevin Lane didn’t answer. He just stared at Emily for a few long seconds, then turned and walked away.

The butler, expressionless, stepped forward in his place. His tone was formal, brooking no refusal. "Ms. Blair, please return to your room and wait there."

As Emily glanced at the staff gathering quietly around her, her face lost its warmth.

She turned to leave, and as she did, a group of society ladies couldn’t resist tossing compliments in Isabella Austin’s direction.

"If Emily Blair had even a fraction of Ms. Austin’s character, she wouldn’t be in this mess. Everyone knows the Lanes are the kindest people—if Kevin Lane kicked her out, she must’ve done something truly awful."

Emily’s thoughts were cold and sharp.

They were right. She wasn’t a good person.

Emily spent the next two or three hours alone in her room. She ate the meal the staff brought her, not once stepping outside.

It had been a humiliating day, but even so, she’d gotten what she wanted.

An hour ago, Andrew Lane had already wired the five hundred thousand into her account.

Staring at the balance on her bank card, Emily felt the knot of resentment in her chest loosen a little.

What she hadn’t expected was that it would be Andrew Lane himself who came to call her downstairs.
