In her previous life, most of the girls who’d followed Elizabeth Wilson around in high school had ended up joining her first startup. She could still remember their faces, some clearer than others.

But this girl—Alice Anderson—stood out for the opposite reason. Elizabeth couldn’t recall ever seeing her on the team.

She didn’t dwell on it. Instead, she made small talk, her tone light and casual. “So, you’re working part-time here? How much do you make a day?”

Alice’s lips curled into a satisfied smile. “The Lane family and their guests are really generous. I’ve already made over a thousand in tips.”

Emily Blair’s eyes went wide in disbelief. “How much? A thousand?!”

Alice grinned, shook her finger once, then held up three fingers instead. “No, more than that. Three thousand.”

For a moment, Emily almost lost her appetite for the dessert she was holding. The sweet treat suddenly tasted bland and unappealing.

She found herself seriously considering running over to Andrew Lane and begging him to hire her as a waitress on the spot.

Alice gave a furtive glance to both sides, lowering her voice to a hurried whisper. “I can’t talk anymore, I need to get back to work.”

Emily could only nod wistfully, watching her disappear.

As she lowered her gaze to her plate, she heard a set of steady, familiar footsteps approaching across the wooden floor.

She knew that gait as well as she knew her own heartbeat. She didn’t even need to look up to know who it was.

Andrew Lane reached out and took her firmly by the wrist, pulling her to her feet. “What are you doing crouched down here?” he asked.

Emily popped another bite of dessert into her mouth and gave a humorless little snort. “What are you doing here, Andrew? Isn’t today your engagement party? Shouldn’t you be with your fiancée instead of hunting me down?”

Andrew shot her a look, his eyes darker than ever. “Isabella wants you at the main table. Come on.”

Emily nearly dropped her dessert in surprise. “She asked you to come get me?”

Andrew glanced at his watch, not bothering to explain. “Hurry up.”
