As soon as Emma George heard the words “police station,” she immediately raised her voice. “Police? What police? I don’t know anything about this, and don’t you try to trick me with this nonsense.”

Emily hadn’t told her mother what had happened the night before, so Emma had no idea how serious things were.

Taking her mother’s wrist gently, Emily tried to reassure her. “Mom, I’ll be back as soon as I’ve sorted this out. Please don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

Emma’s brows were drawn together in deep concern. “What’s going on? Why do the police want to see you? Did something happen?”

Emily patted her mother’s hand in comfort. “It’s alright, Mom. If I’m innocent, the truth will come out. I’ll explain everything when I get back.”

With that, she turned to Andrew Lane, her eyes clear and steady, her composure unshaken.

“I’ll go with you.”

After getting into the car with Andrew Lane, he did, indeed, drive her straight to the police station.

She cooperated fully, answering a long list of questions posed by the detectives.

At one point, one of the officers paused when she insisted she barely knew Alice Anderson. “That’s odd,” he said, eyebrow raised. “Alice claims you’re very close.”

Emily’s tone remained calm. “Is there any proof? We’ve barely exchanged a handful of words. All our classmates can confirm that.”

The detective leaned forward. “So you’re saying you never told Alice Anderson to harm or assault Isabella Austin?”

Emily answered crisply, “No, I didn’t.”

The officer nodded, scribbling in his notepad.

“Alice Anderson claims he acted because you were jealous of Isabella Austin—he says you asked him to do it.”

Emily didn’t so much as blink. “Then show me the evidence.”
