My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 135

So, in other words, this man probably wasn’t that sick after all.

A surge of anger flared up in Emily Blair’s chest.

There were several people gathered around the hospital bed—family, she guessed, of the new patient.

She walked into the crowd, still clinging to a shred of politeness, careful not to barge in too abruptly.

“Excuse me, could you tell me where the last patient from this bed went?” she asked.

The middle-aged man and his relatives eyed her with suspicion. He answered curtly, “Out in the hallway. Go look for them there. You won’t find who you’re after in here.”

Emily kept her tone gentle, still trying to be civil. “I just wanted to know—why would the previous patient suddenly be moved out to the hallway instead of staying in the room?”

The man bristled, sensing her disapproval. He tossed his half-eaten fried chicken into the bucket and, with crumbs still clinging to his mouth, sneered, “What, you that old lady’s family? Here to stir up trouble and demand justice?”

He gave a derisive laugh. “Let me tell you something—maybe you folks shouldn’t be so poor, barely able to scrape together the hospital bills. I’ve got people backing me. My advice? Stop making a scene. Bring money or get someone with real power to speak for you.”

Someone behind Emily yanked at her shoulder, gruff and unwelcoming. “Hey, who are you? Don’t come in here making trouble. If you don’t leave, I’ll call security and have you thrown out.”

Emily shook off the hand, letting out a cold laugh. “You’ve got some nerve. Forcing an old woman out of her hospital bed? That’s something only a monster would do.”

She raised her voice deliberately, making sure everyone in the room could hear.

Suddenly, a mocking, saccharine voice cut through the tension. “Emily Blair, so you’re the old lady’s granddaughter?”

Emily turned to see a tall woman in a tan trench coat step into the room. She was strikingly pretty, holding a fruit basket in one hand, her lips curled in a familiar, sarcastic smile.

Sophia Clark.

Isabella Austin’s best friend.
