My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 134

Elizabeth Wilson switched off her phone, her eyes unfocused as she gazed up at the sky. The last rays of sunlight spilled across her still-young face, her eyes glazed with a misty sheen. In that moment, she looked nothing like a typical high school girl—she resembled someone aged by life’s hardships.

“My grandma’s sick,” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “It’s serious. She needs a lot of money for treatment.”

A jolt of unease shot through Emily Blair.

In her previous life, she remembered that after a few years, she’d never heard about Elizabeth’s grandmother again. Now she understood—this must have been the time when her grandmother passed away.

Suddenly, tears welled up in Elizabeth’s eyes. She sniffed stubbornly, refusing to let them fall.

“I haven’t been going to school lately,” she confessed quietly. “I’ve been at the hospital with Grandma. Most of our savings have gone into paying for her treatment. I barely have any money left—there’s only a few dollars left in my wallet. If this keeps up, I won’t even be able to afford food in a few days.”

Emily was about to speak when Elizabeth cut her off seamlessly.

“I thought the hospital would be a safe place—fair and just. But even though I paid the fees, the doctors and nurses still forced my grandma out of her room.”

Elizabeth’s voice trembled. She wiped at her eyes, but a tear escaped down her cheek. “Now she’s sleeping in the hallway. The people who took her room have money—and connections. I can’t fight them.”

Emily’s brows knitted in anger. “What? Let’s go to the hospital right now.”

The hospital Elizabeth had chosen for her grandmother was the most reputable in the city, a place where families from all over came seeking treatment. The whole building was packed; people crowded every corridor, making it nearly impossible to move.

After winding their way through the throngs, Elizabeth finally led Emily to her grandmother’s bed—a narrow cot squeezed against the wall in the hallway. Elizabeth gently helped her grandmother sit up.

“Here, Grandma, careful.”
