The executive assistant appeared in front of her at some point, extending a hand toward Andrew Lane. “Ms. Blair, right this way, please.”
Emily Blair’s face was unreadable. “I want to eat first.”
The assistant smiled politely. “Mr. Lane has already reserved a table nearby. The kitchen’s ready to serve as soon as you arrive.”
Inside the private dining room, Emily Blair carefully set her utensils in place, poured herself a glass of warm water, and took a sip. When she looked up, she caught Andrew Lane reaching across the table, his tone brooking no argument.
“Hand me your phone.”
She eyed him warily. “What for?”
He fixed her with a cold, unwavering stare. “Take me off your blocked list.”
Emily set her glass down and stifled a cough. “There’s no need. We don’t have anything to talk about.”
Andrew’s frown deepened, clearly dissatisfied. “Emily Blair.”
Ignoring him, she picked up her fork, speared a piece of chicken, and chewed slowly.
She gazed out the window at the busy street, watching the ebb and flow of pedestrians. The city was alive with movement.
On a distant skyscraper, a massive screen flashed an advertisement—the Starlight Piano Competition, an event held only once every four years in their city. It drew top piano talent from across the country, judged by renowned pianists from around the world.
The competition was famous for its integrity. The judges were strict, impartial, and immune to favoritism or backdoor deals. In its thirteen editions, there had never been so much as a whisper of scandal. The winner almost always went on to achieve international fame.
Nearly every famous pianist had competed in the Starlight and earned a place among its laureates.
Her teacher, Vivian Martin, had dreamed of entering the Starlight for years. But with the competition held only once every four years, Vivian waited three years—only to end her own life the year before it was held.
Emily wanted to fulfill Vivian Martin’s last wish.
She also wanted to stop Isabella Austin from trading on Vivian’s reputation for her own gain.
Emily was determined to reclaim everything Isabella had stolen from Vivian, every honor and every ounce of recognition.
And the surest way to do that was by winning the Starlight Piano Competition.
But she’d returned to this life at the worst possible moment; registration for the competition had already closed.
