My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 157

Elizabeth Wilson could tell right away—ever since Emily Blair had seen Andrew Lane earlier, her mood had plummeted.

Not daring to set her off, Elizabeth asked in a low voice, “Did you get anything to eat?”

Emily shot back, exasperated, “No. Just seeing Andrew Lane was enough to fill me up—with rage.”

Elizabeth reached over and gave the boy in front of her a sharp smack on the back.

He yelped, “What the heck, Elizabeth?”

She replied, “Got any snacks? Hand them over. Emily hasn’t had lunch.”

Immediately, students around them started rummaging through their desks, tossing whatever snacks and treats they had onto Emily’s desk.

Before Emily could dodge, a pack of bread smacked her right in the forehead.

She clutched her head, half-laughing, half-crying at the absurdity.

Looking at the mountain of snacks piling up, she raised a hand. “Okay, that’s enough. Seriously, I’ve got more than enough.”

Elizabeth tore open the bread and stuck a straw into a carton of milk, then asked softly, “What’s wrong? You seem really down.”

Emily let out a sigh. “It’s Andrew Lane. He just gets under my skin.”

Elizabeth waved dismissively. “Just treat him like he’s invisible. Let him strut around all he wants—ignore him.”

But that was easier said than done when he was always there, right in front of her.

Emily nibbled the bread without much enthusiasm, nodding weakly.

With Andrew Lane refusing to help with the Starlight Piano Competition application, she’d have to find another way.

That night, after evening study hall, Emily and Elizabeth skipped their usual after-school hustle and went straight to the hospital to visit Emily’s grandmother.

Lately, her grandmother had been in much better spirits. She held Emily and Elizabeth’s hands, chatting away and telling stories.

Emily listened to every word.

On the walk home, Elizabeth bumped Emily’s shoulder. “Hey, where’d you drift off to? You’ve been spaced out all evening.”

Emily looked up and saw, not far away, the giant digital billboard that had seemed so distant earlier in the day.

She hesitated, then admitted, “I’ve been thinking about the Starlight Piano Competition. The registration deadline’s already passed, and I have no idea how I can still get in.”

Elizabeth frowned. “Starlight Piano Competition? Is it a big deal? Never heard of it.”

Emily shook her head with a wry smile. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll figure something out.”

Elizabeth slung an arm around her shoulders, saying loyally, “Hey, even if I don’t know what it is, I’ll ask around for you. I know a ton of people—someone’s bound to have a connection.”

Emily didn’t dare hope for much, but she nodded. “Thanks.”
