He was willing to do what Isabella Austin couldn’t bring herself to.
Alex White lifted his head, meeting Andrew Lane’s gaze, his lips curving in a mocking smirk. “Mr. Lane, I thought you were someone important, but you can’t even keep Emily Blair in line.”
Isabella’s voice was anxious. “Alex, don’t say that. Emily is still Andrew’s sister.”
Alex clenched his jaw. His usually warm eyes cooled, disappointment flickering in their depths. “Isabella, you always defend him—don’t you care about yourself at all?”
His expression shifted, dark and unfamiliar; Isabella hadn’t seen Alex look at her this way in years—not since the day he confessed his feelings for her and Andrew had gotten in the way. This was the first time he’d ever looked at her like that.
Isabella faltered. “I… I didn’t mean it like that.”
Seeing the color drain from her face, regret flashed through Alex’s eyes. The last thing he wanted was to frighten her. He took a steadying breath, forcing down the bitterness inside him, and softened his tone. “It’s fine, forget it. I’m not mad at you. I’m just worried, that’s all.”
Isabella nodded. “I know. You don’t have to worry so much. I’ll talk to Emily myself.”
Alex didn’t argue. “I’ve got something to take care of, so I’ll leave you with Mr. Lane for now.”
He shot Andrew a loaded look.
But before he could leave, Isabella grabbed his sleeve. “Alex, what is it? What’s going on?”
He gently pried her hand from his arm, voice gentle. “It’s just something personal. It won’t take long. You should eat something before you get too hungry.”
A hint of a smile returned to Isabella’s lips. “Then hurry back.”
Alex nodded and smiled. “I will.”
He turned to Andrew. “Mr. Lane, look after Isabella, would you? Don’t let anything happen to her.”
