Yet they were used to chaos—most people panicked when the police arrived, their words tumbling out in a flood of nerves, especially those under suspicion. It usually took time and patience to calm a room enough to get a coherent story.

But here was the supposed suspect: a young girl with a pretty, almost childlike face, but eyes that were steady and unflinching. She didn’t seem the least bit intimidated—even greeting them as if their uniforms meant nothing at all.

The female officer, recovering from her surprise, offered a gentle smile and, wanting to put Emily at ease, asked softly, “How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine,” Emily replied. “Can we get this over with? I’m in a bit of a hurry.”

The officer blinked. “You have somewhere you need to be?”

“I have an important competition to attend,” Emily said.
