Emily Blair’s expression remained perfectly composed, not the slightest flicker in her eyes.
She didn’t flinch as Alex White jabbed a finger in her face and spat, “Do you think that just because Isabella isn’t here, you can do whatever you want? Say whatever you please? You’re shameless! Plenty of people saw you drag Isabella in with you, and you still have the nerve to lie to the police!”
The female officer frowned, rising to stand between Alex and Emily. Her voice was low and firm. “Mr. White, we’re conducting an investigation. Please keep your voice down and don’t interfere.”
Alex’s striking features twisted with fury. “She’s lying. Don’t listen to a word she says!”
The male officer’s expression darkened. “Mr. White, whether or not she’s lying, we’ll investigate. Until we have the full story, I suggest you refrain from making accusations.”
Emily glanced up, catching the storm brewing in Andrew Lane’s face and the wildfire of anger on Alex’s. She gave a faint, mocking smile and said nothing, her eyes glinting with cold sarcasm.
Alex was provoked by that look—his rage flared again. “Emily Blair, you—!”
The female officer’s patience snapped. “Mr. White, if you keep disturbing the other patients or interfering with our work, you’ll be removed from the hospital for obstructing police business.”
Alex clenched his jaw, chest heaving with barely contained anger.
Under the gaze of everyone present, he squeezed his eyes shut, drew a shaky breath, then stepped back to stand beside Andrew Lane. He said nothing more, but his face was thunderous, black as night.
The female officer watched him for a moment, making sure he wouldn’t interrupt again before taking her seat.
“Emily Blair, please continue.”
Emily folded her hands neatly across her stomach, her voice steady and clear. “First, I’m willing to cooperate with your investigation. The incident happened at the city’s most luxurious six-star hotel—the best in town. Their pool is covered by a full-surround surveillance system. You’re welcome to check the security footage.”
“Second, in response to what Alex White just said, I want to clarify—”
The female officer was surprised.
The young woman in front of her was pale, almost bloodless, and looked barely out of her teens. With her fresh face, most people would expect her to be flustered, overwhelmed by the situation.
But Emily was calm, unflinching in the face of Alex’s provocation, laying out her position with clear, measured words.
Her mind was sharp, her reasoning precise. It was the kind of composure most people could only envy.
Even the officer herself couldn’t claim to be so poised under pressure.
She straightened, giving Emily her full attention.
“I can’t swim,” Emily stated softly. “And... I’m afraid of water.”
Both officers were clearly taken aback.
