My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 225

Alex White was still ranting on, his voice sharp with agitation.

“I’m telling you, you’d better pray Isabella’s child is perfectly fine. If there’s even the slightest—”

He was so furious at Emily Blair’s indifference that he could hardly breathe. He glared at her for a long moment, speechless with outrage.

Emily, still recovering, didn’t have the strength to spar with either of these men. Alex’s silence suited her just fine; the peace was a relief.

Eventually, Alex gave up and fell quiet. That’s when Andrew Lane stepped forward.

Through the thin hospital blanket, Emily heard Andrew’s deep, resonant voice—weighted with disappointment.

“Emily, even now, you still haven’t learned to listen. You never learn, do you?”

No matter what Alex said, it never got to Emily. But Andrew—maybe it was everything she’d been through before, maybe it was just him—his words made her heart twist, if only for a second.

She curled up tighter under the blanket and squeezed her eyes shut.

Andrew continued, “The only reason you’re still in the hospital instead of a jail cell is because you’re unconscious. If you were well enough, I’d have sent you to the police station already.”

Emily’s eyelids fluttered.

She snapped her eyes open, a sharp ache spreading through her chest.

She kept trying to back away, but it never gave her what she wanted.

Throwing back the blanket, she stared at the faded hospital nightstand, lips pressed in a thin line. Her voice was calm and measured as she finally spoke.

“The police haven’t come to any conclusions yet, but you two are in such a hurry to convict me.”

“If they check the security footage and decide I’m guilty, you’re free to say whatever you want—no one will stop you. But for now, up until this moment, I’m still innocent.”
