My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 228

Emily Blair’s gaze faltered, and she lowered her head. “Is that so?”

The middle-aged woman nodded emphatically. “Of course! I like you a lot. You’re so caring, so kind, and to think you’d do something so outrageous for someone else’s grandmother.”

Emily couldn’t help but let out a helpless, bemused laugh.

The woman pressed on. “I just want you to know you’re wonderful. Don’t pay any attention to what those two men say.”

Emily’s lashes trembled. She lifted her eyes to look at the woman.

There were deep lines on the woman’s face, and her clothes were plain—just an old sweater and jeans, her hair pulled back in a no-nonsense ponytail. Life had worn her down, that was clear, but her eyes still sparkled with warmth and spirit.

“Listen, sweetheart, let me tell you—men in suits are the worst. Full of tricks up their sleeves. Don’t let them push you around, you hear? I believe you’d never do anything illegal. Stay strong. Stand up for yourself.”

Emily watched her for a long moment, then gave her a genuine, heartfelt smile.

“All right. I understand. Thank you.”

The woman grinned. “If those two men come bothering you again, just call me over. I can make a scene like nobody’s business.”

At that, the man sitting beside her gave her a gentle slap on the arm, half-amused, half-exasperated. “Oh, stop it. Don’t teach the young lady to cause trouble.”

She shot him a look. “What did I say that was wrong?”

He raised his hands in surrender. “All right, all right. You’re right. I’m the one out of line.”

The others in the hospital room, watching this little exchange, burst out laughing, the mood light and easy.

Emily found herself smiling too.

Almost half an hour passed before the door to the hospital room swung open again.

Emily’s brow tensed ever so slightly.

But when she saw who it was, her shoulders relaxed.
