My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 24

Emma George’s voice cracked, unable to hide her distress. “Move out? Why?”

Grandpa Kevin arched an eyebrow, a note of curiosity in his voice. “Weren’t you living comfortably at Andrew’s place? What’s got you thinking about moving?”

Emily Blair curled her fingers nervously. “Grandpa, this house is a bit far from campus, and with Andrew and Ms. Austin together, I don’t want to intrude. I was thinking of renting a place closer to school.”

“Would that be alright, Grandpa?”

Emily was about fifty percent sure Grandpa Kevin would say yes. When it came to choosing between her and Isabella Austin, it had never just been Andrew Lane who favored Isabella—Grandpa Kevin did too. Otherwise, he never would have let Isabella move in to begin with.

From the very start, Grandpa Kevin had been pleased with Isabella. In another life, he’d even warned Emily not to think she could marry into the Lane family just because she happened to have a daughter.

Sure enough, Grandpa Kevin only said, “It’s your decision.”

Relief washed over Emily. She could finally breathe.

After dinner, Emma George stormed over, brimming with indignation. “I won’t allow you to move out.”

Emily kept her head down, packing her bag. “Andrew Lane practically told me to leave himself. How could I stay after that and not feel ashamed?”

“Besides, now that Amelia Lane’s back from the hospital, do you really think things are going to get any easier for us?”

Emma George frowned, beautiful brows knitting together. “Can’t you just talk things over with Amelia? Apologize properly to Andrew?”

“Apologize?” Emily shot back, a bitter laugh escaping her. “That’s exactly why I can’t stay here. Everyone knows it was Amelia’s fault, but somehow I’m the one expected to apologize.”

Her gaze faltered. She rummaged through her backpack, suddenly uneasy. She was sure she’d wrapped up the broken jade pendant and put it in her bag—so where was it?

Emma George, clearly dissatisfied with Emily’s attitude, grabbed her by the shoulder. “Did you hear me? Just talk to them. Why do you have to be so stubborn?”
