My Great Escape Led Me to You novel Chapter 25

Ethan’s face darkened instantly. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Emily didn’t want to argue any further. She turned away. “It’s late. I need to get some rest.”

She ushered Emma out of the room with her. Just as she was closing the door, Ethan’s voice slipped through the crack.

“Hey, Andrew, Isabella’s been waiting for you. Why don’t you go keep her company? I won’t let Emily Blair bother you guys.”

Andrew’s reply was quiet, almost indifferent. “Yeah. Got it.”

Curled up on her bed, Emily scrolled through her phone until she found her bank account balance. It wasn’t much—her father’s inheritance and the monthly allowance the Lane family had sent her over the years. Still, it was enough to finish school and rent a place of her own.

Emily didn’t hesitate. She started browsing rental listings right away and, before she went to sleep, had already scheduled viewings with an agent for the next evening after class.

The second day of the semester passed uneventfully for Emily—probably because Amelia Lane was still in the hospital and her little clique didn’t dare cause trouble without her.

But as Emily was leaving school that afternoon, one of Amelia’s hangers-on deliberately bumped her shoulder, hissing in a low, venomous voice, “Don’t get cocky, Emily.”

Emily ignored her. She had two apartments to see tonight, and nothing was going to get in her way.

Senior year meant late study sessions, and by the time Emily finally left campus, the sky was already pitch black. She walked lightly, steps quick and alert. Everything was quiet—until she turned down a narrow side street. Suddenly, pounding footsteps echoed behind her.

Her heart skipped. She bolted, running as fast as she could. Behind her, someone shouted, “Get her!”

They caught up before she could get away, slamming her down onto the pavement. Her mind went blank, breath coming in sharp, panicked gasps.

“Damn, this little bitch can run.”

A hard slap landed across her face, setting her ears ringing. Emily clung desperately to her shirt, feeling hands roaming all over, searching for any weakness.

“She’s so fresh—bet she’s never even been with a guy before.”
