That’s the difference between heaven and earth.
Emily Blair was painfully aware of the chasm between them, and the realization only made her feel more powerless.
She clenched her fists. “So what do you want from me?”
Andrew Lane didn’t answer right away. Instead, he turned his head slightly, his gaze falling on the now-empty bowl sitting on the coffee table.
His voice was low and hoarse. “Your efforts to please me… they do work, you know.”
Emily’s heart skipped.
Andrew turned back to her, his eyes cold and unreadable, lips barely parting. “It’s a shame, though.”
She didn’t have time to process his words before she saw his hand lift.
The gesture was eerily similar to how Alex White had just tried to grab her throat.
Emily’s pupils shrank and she instinctively backed away. Her heel caught on the edge of the sofa.
Thrown off balance, she twisted her ankle and the world spun. She crashed to the floor with a thud, hands shooting out faster than her head could react, bracing herself against the sofa’s backrest and narrowly avoiding smashing her forehead.
Thankfully, the carpet softened her fall, and she wasn’t badly hurt.
Emily took a shaky breath, steadying herself.
In that split second, she remembered catching a glimpse of Andrew’s face—utterly impassive, watching her fall with a cool detachment, no hint of intention to help her.
Before she could stand, she caught movement in her peripheral vision: Andrew walked over from the other side of the sofa and stopped right in front of her.
Her heart pounded as she slowly looked up at him.
Andrew lowered his gaze, looking down at her with a faint, mocking smile. “That’s all the courage you’ve got? You’re this shaken up?”
Emily felt the sting of humiliation, as if he’d slapped her across the face.
Shame burned through her as she gripped the back of the sofa, trying to stand.
But Andrew’s cold, indifferent voice fell from above her. “I didn’t say you could get up.”
Emily froze, frowning. “Then what do you want?”
Despite herself, she still tried to rise. She couldn’t stand letting him look down on her like this.
