Isabella Austin’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, but her voice remained soft and gentle. “Mrs. Lane, it’s not what you think.”
Diana Harris, once suspicious, was now implacable. “Then what is it?”
Isabella lowered her gaze. “I just… I don’t think Emily meant any harm. She’s still young—”
“Still young?” Diana cut in sharply, her tone growing more impatient by the second. “She’s an adult now, Isabella. You don’t have to make excuses for her. I know exactly what’s going on, don’t think I don’t.”
She pressed on, her words biting. “That Emily Blair—I knew she was up to no good the moment she moved in with the Lane family. And look at the chaos she’s caused! Even now, after she’s left, she’s still stirring up trouble. I swear, she’s like a bad penny—just won’t go away.”
Isabella felt a secret thrill at Mrs. Lane’s words, but masked it behind a look of helpless concern.
Leaning closer, Isabella gently took Diana’s arm, patting it in a comforting gesture. “Please, Mrs. Lane, don’t get worked up. I’m sure things will get better as Emily grows up.”
Diana’s expression hardened. “Absolutely not. Mark my words, that girl’s got nothing but trouble on her mind. She’s been secretly pining after Andrew for who knows how long, probably scheming to marry him just to climb the social ladder. She never knows her place—always chasing dreams way out of her league.”
Isabella’s smile faded a little.
Diana’s expression grew grim. “If Emily Blair can pull something like this today, who knows what she’ll be capable of tomorrow? This needs to be dealt with once and for all.”
She suddenly turned, giving Isabella a pointed look as she patted her arm with a mixture of exasperation and concern. “And you—you can’t keep indulging Emily Blair like this. If you keep letting her walk all over you, one day she’ll be the one calling the shots.”
Isabella lowered her head, hiding the flicker of emotion in her eyes.
Diana sighed. “Isabella, I know you’re kind, but not everyone is as decent and considerate as you are. You need to be more guarded with Emily. Don’t let her get away with things like this anymore.”
“Not just you—Andrew too.”
A faint blush crept up Isabella’s cheeks.
She remembered the swimming pool—how, after both she and Emily had fallen in, Andrew Lane and Alex White rushed to save her first, leaving Emily behind. The only reason they went back for Emily was because they realized they’d have to answer for it if they didn’t.
And then there was that charm Andrew said he would give his beloved for protection.
She used to doubt Andrew’s feelings, but after this, she knew she never would again.
Andrew’s heart, it seemed, belonged to her alone.
Isabella’s heart fluttered. She whispered, “Mrs. Lane, Andrew treats me very well.”
Diana poked her forehead lightly, half-scolding, half-amused. “That’s all it takes to make you happy? You’re far too easy to please.”
Isabella bit her lip shyly, saying nothing.
Diana’s tone turned cold. “If there are things you can’t say, I’ll say them for you.”
